Air Layering

I'm over buying root stock unless it's a tree I don't have. I have some plums and peaches getting on in age as well as some oak and other natives I was thinking of either grafting or cutting and planting (I forget what this is called).

I stumbled upon this technique called Air Layering which seems like a quicker way to start a "clone" then planting a cutting. Has anyone found success or not with this technique?

video here for what it is:

I think that's a fig in the video. It's not as easy with apples and plums, but you can stump layer them.

I’ve been meaning to try it with bush cherrys but haven’t yet

I tried some last year on apple trees with no luck.

Tried again in May with a different setup. Next time up was too soon, didn't bother to check. Last time was only two weeks later and I only glanced at them. Later in the trip I realized it would be smarter to focus some time and attention on the few wild saplings that are already growing, rather than trying to start new ones. lol

I successfully air layered an Elm tree, but no luck on apples, plums, or pears. Most videos about it are Fig trees.
