Swiffy's View From Rocky Knoll

Crabs from NWC are doing great! Corn and beans are up and doing pretty good.

I sprayed with Libertylink the other day and it seems to have burnt my beans a bit... I hope they recover just fine.

NO shortage of weeds. It’s mostly Rye. Temps were either to cold or too wet or I was too busy to spray up till now.73D70664-167D-498C-9D63-20A6DB0A3BE2.jpegA53FA6CF-3DFE-498E-AED6-78FA48EEA946.jpeg

NWC look good so do the plots.
Perkins looks to be having a nice run.

Awesome place there!

Curious - Does your milkweed sprout the same year or does it have to stratify in freezer / over winter?

I still have some of yours leftover, great wind checker!

Well... LOL... Ive never planted any! Theres so much of it here ive never actually tried to plant it. You should message ACCMan. I sent him a bunch of it, I think the same time as you and he said his was coming along nicely so I dont THINK that it needs to stratify?

Let me know if you want another box full for wind checking

I read alot about planting milkweed and based upon that, I did stratify the seed in the freezer before planting and they are doing well.

Great, that makes me happy to hear Owen! Do you have some big pods on them as well??

No pods yet. We had a really long cool spring, and we have been very dry, but lots of blooms so the pods should be on the way. Thanks again for the seeds.

Well the wife and I got out and trimmed some stands today. Figured I better take some photos. The plots look good. They filled with “diversity”, mainly the beans. But still I have almost waist high beans so I’m happy with the turnout!

Here’s a small kill plot as they enter the corn beans. Planted it heavy with Rye and some Peas. Stand is in that high, bushy tree on the right... It’s a good one.

Got everything in place at the “Scrape tree”

Here’s some of these messy beans... a lot of food in there....

Here’s another spot where I cut out all the overhanging box elder so they can scrape. It’s all plum deep inside there. They’re hitting the ground heavy right now. The deer are going to like where I cleared this out...

Throw-n-go radishes in my clover that was 5-6 yrs old. Came in good in parts... I overseeded the whole deal with Rye.

Here’s a spot we kill some big deer we call it “the Hump” it’s rye and clover this year but it’s just gotten way too shaded... time for the chainsaw.

Here’s my Throw N Mow Jap Millet. It’s trashed right here... I think it may be from turkeys, there’s a bunch of feathers out in there?

Looks good.
I like that stand set in the bushy tree.

Hey fellas! I’ve been away for a while since our house fire back in August. Finally got moved back in about a month ago and just been busy unpacking and getting settled in. It’s good to have a home again!

The winter just wasn’t the same not living at the farm. I tried to keep an eye on the deer and I tried to kill some coyotes, but it’s just not easy having to make an event of it to drive out to do it. It makes me appreciate living on our property! I feel for you guys that have to travel to your properties, it’s definitely not the same connection as being there every moment!

So anyway the good news is that most of the bucks I was trying to keep safe seemed to have made it through the winter! I was feeding 5 better bucks and found sheds from 3 of them. I’m excited as we will finally have a nice 4 yr old around the farm again! It’s been a few years and I’m looking forward to hunting him!

I hope everyone is well and healthy and ready for spring projects!

The last picture is the growth from age 2 to 3.
Ooohh my daughter and I are in the Turkey blind and just heard a gobble!

Great update Swiffy. Nice sheds, and wishing you good luck in your turkey hunting.

Good to here you are all moved back in.
Nice bucks, congrats on the sheds wish I had someone close that could drop off a round bale every fall at our place great xtra food source.
Perkins looks in doggie bliss helping with the sheds.

Well I was looking out the window the other evening and I saw 3 Tom’s 1/2 mile away, heading through the CRP towards an oak ridge of mine. That was exciting, as I’ve never seen 3 Tom’s on my property in 40 years!
The next morning I got up and headed to a blind I had on a rye plot near the oak ridge. I sat about 5 minutes before the gobbling started. I made a few clucks and within 10 minutes of shooting time I had 2 hens and 2 big Tom’s in my decoys! I shot what I thought was the better of the 2 and then say and watched the show as the other displayed and courted the hens just 8-10 feet from my blind!
After the show was over I went and got Lyti to come and help dad with his Turkey. She sure wants the other one now! It was the first Turkey ever off our property and was a great day!
