Wood burner in a blind.

Love it! Why sleeping in it? Is it your cabin or are trying to not bump deer in the dark? (Or does your wife some say-so in all this?)
Lol, it's to not bump deer. It's a very easy location to come and go from in daylight but extremely hard to do at night without bumping deer. I've seen a significant difference in Deer sightings by doing this.
My wife hates it, she thinks I'm going to die of carbon monoxide in the blind. I wait till I'm up in the morning to turn the heat on unless it's bitter cold. Curled up in a mummy sleeping bag I can handle temps in the 20s pretty well.

That's awesome! It's funny as I had the same thoughts as your wife. Worried that CO would get you in your sleep. Glad you've thought of it.

I'm curious how the deer react. Years ago I smoked my camo with a #10 can and some burning sticks. Deer downwind went bat$hit crazy blowing and stomping.

Guessing may depend on how often the deer smell smoke/fires? Living in a rural county in Florida with no trash pick-up, I burn paper trash several times a week year-round and living close to the center of my 100+ acre property with about 60 wooded acres burn fallen limbs very regularly as well.

I don't always purposefully burn a fire and smoke what I'm wearing when going to sit in my stand (only about 100 yards from where I burn many fires though blocked from sight by trees), but have done it multiple times and especially so if concerned that winds might not be predictably favorable and it didn't seem to hurt traffic or alarm the deer / seemed if anything to put them at ease. Probably doesn't hurt either that neighbors on two big parcels to my east and north also burn regularly.

Hillrunner,

what propane heater was it. Those nuway stoves might get too much draft without a damper on it. Almost any chimney based heating source will heat a 5x7 cabin ok. Got air leaks, insulation. Another thing, bing the cold air to the stove Have it direct piped to the income air, or put a tube with a damper that directs air at the stove inlet. Having it go across the cabin through a cracked window make the corners of the cabin cold.

Far as a CO meter goes, you could add a 12v battery and a trickle charger solar panel. You get lights, a small fan, even could use a 12v heated blanket.

I sleep in a 6x12 trailer with 1 inch foam insulation on the walls 1.5" on the ceiling, and carpet on the floor. I use a newport P1200 propane stove. Not perfect when its really cold out. Great when the nights are 20 deg F. Most nights its too warm in there. Downside is regulating the heat.

They say it makes about 5000 btu which is equivalent to a 1500w 120v heater. Really wanted one of these, but wouldn't work too well in a mobile trailer. Roadsalt getting in to the chimney pipe.

I use one of these CO meters.

I thought I'd update this post. The conditions were perfect tonight with single digit highs and fresh snow on the ground. I had picked out an older big bodied management buck to hunt for late season.

I got to the blind early and started the fire. Smoke billowed in all directions as this is in a valley where the wind always swirls. The blind was quickly warmed up and i took off my heavy coat.

About an hour and a half later the deer started to filter in. Some would even stop and watch the smoke curling up from the chimney but showed no concern.

Around 4:45 a nice 3 year old stopped in the timber edge about 50 yards away and watched the smoke rising up for a few seconds before moving on. Right on his heels was the buck I came in after. He stopped in the same spot as the 3 year old had. I put the iron sites on him and filled the air with black powder smoke.

I'm extremely satisfied with the wood burner and I have seen zero negative reaction from the deer. At times the deer were directly in the smoke. I guess they just don't sense that as danger

That’s a cool buck, how old do you think he is and how long have you known about him?

Nice buck. Nice muzzleloader too. What kind is that one? Got regular iron or those fiber optic ones? Open areas I normally use one with regular open irons. More wooded places I use a lyman peep sight with the front sight painted in glow in the dark paint. White isn't so great, shoud paint it orange to contrast the snow better.

Im 48 now, heated hunted is way better than other kinds of hunting......

Got a pic of that portable blind on a trailer?

You have a specific air inlet port for the woodstove to get outside air? if you put a little shroud around the stove inlet, some stove burn longer. The air get drawn close to the metal surface of the stove and tins out the air with heat, making it burn slower.

I'm not sure exactly on age, I had one picture of him last year and he looked basically the same. This year he moved in and made himself right at home. He's built like a linebacker and I did not want him to become the main boss next fall. Check out the body size difference of him and this 2 yo with a similar rack size.

It's a knight mk85. State of the art at one time. I upgraded it to use 209 primers about 20 years ago. That made it a way more reliable gun.

The site is what I think is called an aperture site?
The back site is basically a peep that you center the front site inside.

I don't see any pics on my phone of that blind. I built that one several years ago.

I do have a 4" PVC pipe sticking through the wall next to the stove with a cap I can take off to allow fresh air in.

I hope you had some help dragging that buck out, that’s a heavyweight!
