What does everyone have for rotary cutter/mowers (Bush Hog)?

County lines do ok, if you're not using them hard or a ton.

Sometimes you can find Kubota brushhogs cheaper than landpride. I believe they're the same.

Got a woods one at home. Hard to give opinion, think a 3pt finish mower would of been better, or no mower at all. I use a swisher two behind most of the time. Or, use a zero turn when the inlaws are at the store. No real workout.

Do not sell that finish mower. I strongly believe they do better at food plot maintenance, mulching than brush hogs. Higher rpms, more cuts per pass. If you have clogging / bogging issues, check if it's shrouded or not. Some decks have a little bit of shroud to catch more grass to cut and push aside / fold over. Like a little 5 degree notch. If it's shrouded like 120 degrees or more and its removable, remove it.

When doing food plots with either touch up the blades. Probably more important for brush hogs. Some brush hogs are knife options that might work better for food plots than brush removal.

I will probably list the finish mower on our local buy sell trade and see if I get out of it what I want. If not I will keep it, but really don't use it now. I can't imagine using it on my food plots. Just does not seem built to take that kind of punishment. I don't need to mow my clover plots the deer do that for me.

I've got a Woodmax 78" Flail mower. It has the hydraulic offset and I am set up with a hydraulic top link.....so it's easy to adjust. I can operate pretty close to buildings and food plot cover at the sides.

I've cut up to 4" saplings with it....but would not make a steady diet of those. Gotta go slow when you apply that kinda load. The normal 2" + stuff cuts like butter. Leaves a clean cut in food plots. Good value as new flail mowers go. Had high ratings at TBN....which is often my source for up to date info on such things. I just replaced all the knives on mine last summer.....and need to have the old knives sharpened. I've owned mine for 7 (?) years. It's been bullet proof. I run it behind my Kubota L-3860 HSTC which has a net of 30 HP. It's a great combination for me.

The nice thing about flails and a hydrostatic tranny is that you can maintain a good load on the implement via your ground speed....and that helps to clear the machine easily and optimize your productivity.

I have a nice rotary cutter that I have not used since getting the flail. Should sell it.....it just sits there.

I've got the same but without the hydraulic offset and on the same tractor (minus cab). I really like the flail but the 78" one is a bit much for 28.5 PTO HP on my tractor when the stuff gets tall/thick. Was the only one available at purchase time or i'd have got the next size smaller.

@somich - I dont mow enough acreage to justify any additional wear bars. I typically operate it angled up a bit so the roller deal in the back is typically on teh ground but sides are barely floating or at least not full weight on ground most of the time. I hardly use the mower some years as grain drill and herbicides cover most of my concerns.

I'm looking hard at the woodmax as I don't have much ~10ac to annually mow plus some areas that need mid contract work. No need to spend big for that, when I can use the bush hog on the willow and brush to control edges.

I like the idea that the flails spread the the cuttings better than a bush hog.

When you say angled up do you mean that you can mow raised? I often mow with the bush hog raised up to top weeds and would like to have that ability with the flail.

I mean the 3 point top link is short enough that the side skids are just slightly angled up, with the back roller on the ground. It helps keep the mower from getting bogged down vs having the front of the skids touching the ground.

My parents picked up a 12’ batwing.
I haven’t gotten to do any mowing with it yet, but it should be a welcome addition to the 75hp tractor they upgraded to this year.
