Yearling... With promise
Went to a friend's place yesterday that he is killing off a small area to put in a fall food plot. All throughout he had this growing in it and did not appear to be affected by Roundup. I thankfully have not seen it on my place so I told him I would check on here if anyone has any insight. It almost looks like the end of a white pine limb.

Thanks for any insight.

Don't let him bring any equipment to your place. "Field horsetail" spreads by seed and rhizome.
Not sure how to kill it but it's not easy.

Don't pull it out either. Each piece of root left on the ground will grow a new plant.
Don't disk the ground, each piece of root chopped and left under ground will produce a new plant.

A quick search says raise the soils PH and get the ground to drain. Stuff likes wet acidic places.
Herbicide will only top kill it, so the rhizomes are still alive under ground and they will be back.

Sorry to be a Debbie downer, that's bad stuff.

how large of an are is troubled by the beast that doesn't die? small enough to cover with a black tarp/ plastic? the heat will kill itstretch it tight, weigh down the outsides. let it set for a good long hot month, July for example. will kill damn near everything under it. just to be sure do a throw over the top, don't till for fall. then watch for signs of it again, should localize it a lot, and you can re target the areas. in the spring.

You would think. But I've been reading more about this stuff. It's like the devil weed. Black plastic makes it grow into a viney mess under the plastic only to explode once you remove the plastic.

My best advice is put the food plot somewhere else and don't look back.

Thanks for the reply's. I took a small spray bottle I had at home of 24D with me when he first said he didnt think the roundup was doing anything to it. I sprayed it in a corner of the field he is trying to kill. I would estimate that the area is around a 1/3 of an acre.

I just looked up an article on this weed and yes it is some wicked stuff.

I have some of this crap in a few plots. I remember watching AG phd a few years ago and this was the weed of the week. I think they mentioned graxomone for control?
