What do you guys think of rolling a white clover/chicory plot for weed control and perhaps to encourage white clover growth? I've read on a number of occasions (both here, and elsewhere) that people have ran a light disc, no till seeders, and cultipackers through white clover to hopefully knock it back some with anecdotal results of the clover bouncing back more robust than initially. I have a plot that's in year 2 of white clover with good results, its probably near calf high now. I sprayed cleth on the grasses about a week ago then broadcast 100lb of rye into the standing clover. The plot does have some broadleaf weeds but I don't want to spray 2,4d because I don't want to lose the chicory which is also doing pretty well. I was considering running a roller through the plot which may break the stems of the milkweed and ragweed, effectively killing them, and thought the bit of torture to the white clover may encourage more stolen growth of the white clover. I'm not sure how this would effect the chicory, but I don't think its too high that it would be killed by the roller.
Just thinking out loud on perhaps a management technique to manage some weed invasion and possibly kickstart some additional growth in clover plots. May work, may not? Maybe I'll try it just to see what happens in a small section for trial and error. Anyway, just a thought I have been kicking around that I thought I'd throw out for general discussion.
