New Zealand Clover

Just order some new Zealand white clover from albert lea. Anybody ever use this kind of clover? Primary use was in my backyard area where I mow every 2 or 3 weeks.

Does it frost seed? Prolific seeder like most white clovers? Tolerant to mowing. I do wait an extra week or two for seed heads to develop once or twice a year.

Sprayed the area with clethodim at the end of the summer to tame down perennial rye and foxtail. Some clovers there already and plenty of plantain.

What drew you to the NZ clover over some more local varieties?

Did well using hairy vetch from new Zealand at camp. Maybe another nz seed might do good.

For some reason it was only 60 bucks for a 50lb bag.

Was going to give Dutch white a try again. Albert lea said this would do better.

If you've got foxtail, get some gypsum down. It'll help your clover too.

Not lime, gypsum. Assuming the pH is ok, I'd use gypsum. If it's low, use lime. Foxtail is a low calcium indicator weed.

A lot of the whitetail institute clovers have a origin from NZ or at least they used to the last time I looked at the label. I've used their perennial clovers when I find them on sale, the deer seem to like it.

SD please explain gypsum to me. I have never used it. How much to apply and what indicators to look for?

Not lime, gypsum. Assuming the pH is ok, I'd use gypsum. If it's low, use lime. Foxtail is a low calcium indicator weed.

It's probably both. Never pH tested that end of the parcel. Very likely low 5's high CEC and heavier clay. Shale bed pops out of the clay in spots over there, so some of it is not very deep either. Still debating getting a 26 ton sent to my house. USe what I can use at home, then bring 1/4 ton a time to camp. Maybe a full load if I keep the trailer there between weekends.

I am looking for affordable gypsum, atleast for my apple tree plantings. Putting in a row of G890's this year. Seeing whch big box store offers free pickup. Any gyspum bags for doing sheetrock work? See bags of that stuff at home depot.

I don't know what else may be in sheetrock dust. I'd try a golf course near you. If you have clay, they may have clay, and they may have pallets or piles of gypsum, and know where you can get it.

Biologic has been bringing in NZ clovers and brassicas for at least a couple decades now. They seem to do pretty well.
