They continue to impress me

Great fishing too!
Yes definitely! We used to fish by Pierre and did well with walleyes, caught salmon on Oahe as well .

It’s very hard to find an alternative of really good buck quality and the high cash rents of Iowa rec/farm land .

It was so undervalued for many years, I’m just glad I bought when I was a young.

It's a land grab. Land is a precious commodity. Some residents are wanting to make it less appealing for non-residents to own land there so they can own it. The residents vote. Government officials need their votes. If they tick off the residents, they're out of a job. Weed out the competition.

This makes sense. Land and deer grab.

Those guys are getting intense…

This is a loooong podcast that I really think is worth a listen. I am not a huge fan of the hosts, but they do get into some good discussions and typically have interesting guests on. For this episode, they have the person overseeing deer management in Ohio. They talk about Iowa, other states, and of course Ohio deer management policies. Basically everything we regularly get into on this forum.

I always listen to podcasts on 1.3 or 1.5x speed if you're worried about committing 3 hours to a podcast.

My biggest problem with these hosts is they don't shut up. You have a guest on, presumably he's a subject matter expert on the topic, and they talk 80% of the time to the guest's 20%.

I haven't listened to this one yet, wasn't planning on it but now I may give it a shot. Thanks Hoyt.

That is also one of my beefs with them as hosts. I appreciate the long form discussion that stems from it all. Double-edged sword, I guess.

For my area, the farms haven't been fragmented at all. It's just OOS or "city folk" with money that have gobbled up land that came up for sale. The lease prices are through the roof, and those are all OOS hunters in my experience.

A 400 acre farm may have had 7-10 guys that hunted it for multiple species in the past, and now there are 2-3 that hunt the same 400 for deer and maybe turkey only.

It doesn't take long for regular joes without the $$$ to feel the squeeze on finding a place to hunt.

What's the answer to all this?? It's not an easy one for any side.....
Coming to a town near you…

I would be curious to see the auction format. One by us was 1,000 acres auctioned as 11 individual tracts. They were bid on individually and then they were offered as a whole for someone to beat the sum of those high bids. We went through 3 rounds of that before it finally sold as one tract. It made the landowner a bunch of money. But let me tell you about some mad bidders that didn’t understand that was the format. They thought they had won their bids the first go around. Several walked out. Though I am glad it stayed together, I loathe the asshole who bought it. We now have a high fence elk farm on our border. Can’t wait to see what kind of diseases pop up for us. I was bidding on one tract. Once I figured out what the gig was, I was bidding $6,000/acre on my tract. I was preapproved for $2,800…

There’s controversy in the air in Iowa. The DNR eliminated party hunting for Nonresidents during the gun seasons.

Keep in mind it’s a 3 to 5 year wait to draw a tag in Iowa. Guys that owned land or had connections to land (such as former Iowa residents) cannot come back and party hunt anymore.

Fireworks from Nonresidents and Residents right now. The DNR phone is ringing off the hook .

Many guys used this as a deer camp situation where you invite a local hunter or two and then they hunted together for bucks and does.

They changed the rules now. The local Iowa guys used to say “you knew the rules when you bought” .. that argument is out the window .

A lot of pissed off hunters ! Some locals are fine with it as not everyone likes the rule.
What did you guys wind up doing on your Iowa ground this year for gun season? Are you aware of anyone who sold land because of the law being "cleaned up"?

Considered buying a 1/4 section in ND which guarantees a gratis tag as well. Otherwise hunting as a NR is basically an archery only affair and I also wouldn't be surprised if that ceases to be guaranteed because of more people becoming more effective archery hunters out there. Seems like a big risk to base land purchase on assumptions of tag allocations staying the same.

Either people are just responding to the modern hunting environment, or they are seeing the success of Iowa, but I have been seeing people promoting their own states going to a points system for non-resident landowners. I think Iowa is unique in that there is limited habitat and already elevated land prices. But I could definitely see groups try and copy the success of Skip in Iowa in other states.

From what I see (in Arkansas) is that non resident landowners do not put in the work to increase the deer herd (habitat work), and shoot whatever catches their eye. Neighboring 160 sold (did not know it was for sale) for 15 times what I paid for my property in 1995. Previously neighbors on 2000 acres did not take anything under 3 1/2 years old unless it was a doe or a cull. We shared pics of what we considered shoot able. New neighbor took a 2 1/2 and 2 1.5 years old unless olds. I had multiple phone pics of the older deer, but is was unshod table by our standards. It is tough to get them older under those conditions.

I can't get myself to give these guys a click as most of the podcasts ive noticed from them pop up seem to be giving convicted wildlife poachers / game whores a platform. Piss on em.

Sorry I missed this ….

I missed a 155-160 class buck @ 75 yds. Long story but I had my chance. The first evening I passed a really nice 140 type buck.

Temps were high, 60 degrees and windy first two nights. It was slow overall.

So you were able to draw a NR firearm tag for the year?
What are the probabilities for NR to draw a firearm tag in your zone?

Yes I can draw a firearms tag almost every year,,but it’s a 1-2 yr wait for archery . I’ll be putting in a point this year (2025) for a bow tag .
