Two short rows of spruce are starting to create some cover.

I took over spruce duties on our land up north this year. Instead of wasting money for years on them small little worthless plugs I bought the largest ones I could from Itasca greenhouse. What a huge difference. After one season some of the trees I planted this year are already past the stuff we planted 5 years ago as 4 and 6 plugs. Also had 100% survival rate. I tried to keep the ferns and weeds off them this summer by marking them with pink flags. That really seemed to boost them.
Then first week of OCT I bud capped every spruce I could on our property. Think I did 315 trees. 200 (7 easy hours with a shovel and flags) of them were the ones I planted this spring. The other 110 were all that remain of the nearly 1500 that we probably planted the 5 seasons before. I suspect in 3 years they should be 8' tall. I picked some awesome bedrooms and sure hope I am alive to see it in 10-20 years.
Planning like 200 more trees for next year. 1/3 Norway spruce again, 1/3 White pine, 1/3 Canaan Fir. All fast growers. Already have a few dozen whites out there, some scotch pine, Meyers spruce. Very few black spruce and black hills spruce and some fir trees.
Need to figure out a way to zap my ferns and replace with with nice grass like the stuff in your picture too.
