The Adventures of CrazyED the beach sand guy

This is the same tree last year, full bloom on May 24.

This year i dont have pics of Kerr, but i was on the farm at the time, and my centennial was at this point on May 2. My guess is Kerr probably wasnt this far along.

I hope our 2 Kerr trees get some fruit next year. Your pix look great. We have a Centennial too, which produced 3 apples this year. I let them ripen and snipped 2 of the apples to try. Super taste !!! We have a Prairie Spy too and it's been a good grower for us.

Nice job on the paint. Was the Sevin to mainly target borers or any insect ??

For the sevin, not aware of having any borders, but figured (and smsmith confirmed) adding sevin to the mix certainly won't hurt anything. I had to paint them anyways and I had sevin so I just added a tiny bit.

What I have tried is folding that window screen over and restapling it a few times to have a bit more shade on the south or southwest side. I also wonder if black or silver sindow screen makes a difference. I use a wider piece of window screen so I have material to staple im the double fold.

Hey Matt, I sure do like it when you take us along to the farm :D. The apples on the Kerr are just incredible.

Thanks for the info Ed. End of May seems like a late bloom. This year most my blooms were out by mid May. Of coarse we usually have frost into June so none of this may matter most years.

That Kerr looks fantastic, Ed. I have a similar one from Cummins, same age. Between pruning to get above the cage and a late frost, it only has a couple fruits this year. After doing some research last winter, I did topwork several seedling crabs to Kerr. Should be a great deer crab.

Sansa, I would have to check but I think 4th year on MM.111. I grew this one in my home orchard for like 2 years and now it's been at the farm for 2 years. This tree is very tall and spindly. First fruit this year, 4 of them. I thought it tasted good.

This fruit is smaller, I should have thinned. I had another tree with a few fruit and they were significantly larger, easily 2"

This little guy was eating Kerrs all day long, i think he had 4 while we were at the farm.

Food plots have been a challenge for me, but believe it or not they are improving. Finally starting to get a nice thatch of winter rye after 2-3 years.

Great progress CE, naturally I love the fruit tree updates but for your food plots I'm in the same category. You see what i was working with on that thread I made. My MI sand was 4.7 when I started. Way to stick with it!

I have some sand at 4.6 and I started with rye on it. Also some pel lime and calf manure. These are just tiny plots and I stick to the better soils for most foodplots and tree/shrub plantings.

A different kind of beach sand...

This past weekend my family and I went on a little northwoods fall color adventure. One of the stops on Saturday, we hit up another property my parents used to own. My father and his brother bought this place late 70s/early 80s (I was born in 79). I think we ended up selling it by the time I was 10. Some great memories as a young child for me. It was about 4 hours from home, we had our other property in Marquette....how many places can you own and pay taxes on, and really enjoy. Due to distance, this one got nixed. Our property was literally right next to the boat launch, but we had huge frontage and a beautiful sandy beach. Here's a few from the launch, looking down our shoreline which ran down to the second pier. Wall hanger eyes and musky here, my mom and my dad once caught musky's in the same day and were in the local newspaper. Here she is in fall glory.

Small Honeycrisp that tasted awesome. My son and daughter each nibbled on a HC while at the farm today.

Food plots in the best shape i've had them (I think year 4).
CameraZOOM-20151011094729012.jpg

Rye coming in well, brassicas are there but not much size as i've never fertilized them. Even though this plot doesnt look as great as many people have, I can say they are being heavily used. My other plot had 600 pics with up to 8 deer in the frame at once.

Added a little bit of red clover to my mix and thats coming up as well. This pic also shows i'm starting to get some decent thatch that is helping hold moisture and build soil.

Good year for acorns.

Not just about the deer with us. We try to cater to all wildlife. Many of you know my father is a notorious birder, so it's good to see plenty of birds. Waterholes are wonderful.

Looking good Matt, and it's only going to get better. :)

I have an apple tree i'm gonna post pics of later, i'm curious if its a monster or perhaps a dolgo?...watch for that thread and give me your thoughts.

For the record I don't think Monster is a true named variety. I think the name is just from the person who found it and didn't know the real name. Most dolgo are done by now. This thing is very firm and still hanging strong, very different characteristics than dolgo. Should be very easy to tell apart.

There's going to be a bunch of confused folks in the future doing internet searches for some of the trees this group is propagating :D

Who's gonna listen to that guy named "Crazy" ED anyways?

Yep - custom names for the trees here !! Big Dog, Monster, Rootstock, Airport, etc. Keeping my " Centerfold " crab under wraps - no pix !!;):D
