ROD cuttings in water

I got a tip from someone to stick a bunch of my ROD twigs in water. I tried it, and about 75% lived and grew roots. I will pot them in a few weeks and keep them well watered.

Questions:
Should i add anything to the water now, like sugar or fertilizer? Should i add anything once they are potted, like fertilizer?

I typically just put the fresh cuttings into a pot with dirt and keep them well watered. The roots are pretty fragile, so lots of them will break off when you transplant them from water to dirt. I typically put 4 cuttings directly into each pot of dirt and usually one or two survive.

No fertilizer added either. I also put straw on top of the soil to keep the dirt moist.

Do you plant the whole pot, or remove the individual plants?

I cut some the other day and when I planted them I put them into low swampy areas. Put a nice patch right next to my waterhole, but since the dogwoods were already budding when I cut them I am skeptical that they will survive. If I had done it a few weeks earlier I think they would have good survival. I will be experimenting with this the next few years. I know where there are millions of them growing. Wouldnt take much more than a few hours to cut 500 and stick them in around the property.

I cut some 3 weeks ago and pushed them into the soil next to the hunting shack and most of them are blooming.

The ones I stuck in the ground seem to have died.

Throw some willow leafs into the jar of water and wait for more roots before potting. Willow leafs will act as a rooting hormone.

I've never had any luck putting ROD cuttings directly into the ground and walking away. They show life for a while, but eventually croak.

I've had great luck putting cuttings in a pot by keeping them watered all summer until they are transplanted when they go dormant in the fall.

I ran out of steam when planting a bunch of ROD cuttings this spring. I stuck about 30 of them in a 5 gallon bucket with water. It’s been about 6 weeks and none of them have rooted. The ones I stuck directly into the ground are still alive but no budding yet.

Most of the other cuttings I stuck in the ground this year Arrowwood, Silky dogwood, Streamco Willow, and Ninebark have all budded or leafed out. ROD seems to lag behind quite a bit.

Just got back from the hunting shack. You can see the pics of my ROD cuttings from the pics above. As of right now, I have 100% of them surviving and thriving. They are all pushing out leaves. No idea if they will survive for the long haul, but they look awesome right now. The bigger the cutting the better they seem to be doing. I pushed them into the ground as far as I could. Deer are browsing them already.
