Releasing bur oaks

When I did a CRP tree planting years ago I had several burrs that just didn't grow much compared to some 100ft away.I wondered if it was hardpan since that area used to be a field.I took my smallest auger bit and drilled down on 2 sides about 12-24 inches from trunk.Within a couple years they had caught up with the others.
I have an area of planted Bur oaks . It’s fairly sandy soil. The ones on the flat sand grow very slowly or basically go nowhere.

The trees on the edge of the wetlands & with some slope are 18-20 ft tall and producing acorns ?

It’s hard to figure out , could be a moisture factor? More to it I think.

I think now is the time to be looking for signs of growth. I’m gonna check mine this weekend and see if they are trying to push out some new vegetation.

MDC in souther MO had them cut. 3" dia and 80 YO. Said where stunted.

Any commentary on whether they will get going if released?

No and have not heard if much stump growth happened.

Trees generally respond very well to crown release are there some odd outliers to this rule of thumb sure I’m certain you could find some oddball location where the trees are stunted for who knows what reason but I’ll still crown release all my oaks, pecans and walnuts to give as much help as I can the rest is up to Mother Nature.
