Follow up - May 24, 2025.
It’s been almost a year since the mulching was done. Yesterday I planted a summer plot mix. In my already established areas I left a few strips of clover, mostly Durand and Ladino. Based on the recommendation of using legumes in the newly mulched areas I had planted cereal grains and clovers last fall. The clover came on strong this spring and looked great but the plan all along was to disc that under in late spring long with the cereal rye and then plant cowpeas for the summer. It was hard to disc under all that clover but I’ve also got plenty of clover left in the remaining strips. I did not spray before discing, just disced everything in, spread the seed, and cultipacked. Interesting to not that the clover was more sparse in the newly mulched areas and the rye definitely thinner and more lightly colored than in my previously established plots when comparing side by side.
I seeded heavy since it’s still a very new area and I was broadcasting into the disced in clover and rye. I spread 70 pounds per acre of iron and clay peas, 30 pounds per acre of buckwheat, and 3 pounds per acre of Milo. The Milo is actually hopefully serving two purposes - one is to help protect the cowpeas from overbrowsing and to give the peas something to climb but I also planted the Milo. Ore on the perimeter to serve as a kind of screen between the edge of my plots and some newly created bedding areas that are writhing 50-75 yards of some of my plots. Hopefully the Milo does a little double duty.
Supposed to get good rain over the long weekend and there was plenty of moisture already in the soil. I’ll post follow up pics in a couple weeks.
