Not surprised even a little bit but pretty pissed

My wife had jury duty earlier this week. Anybody know if it's standard practice for the people asking potential jurors questions to see if you'll be on the jury and they use your name right there in front of the defendant? I certainly wouldn't think that they would give out the jurors names like that but we are in about the worst county in Minnesota so it wouldn't surprise me that the judge and lawyers don't know what the hell they are doing. I wasn't too happy to hear about it. First they force you to be on the jury and then they potentially put a bullseye on your back. I think it's absolute bull shit. Anyone been on jury duty?
I've been called to jury duty before here. They don't use people's names - just numbers assigned to everyone - and the accused isn't there when potential jurors are picked. Just the 2 opposing attorneys, and the pool of potential jurors. No ID possible. Why is this process not used everywhere? Seems like a no-brainer.

I think if you can show receipts proving you have a vacation booked that it should count as a legit absence. BS to me that you can't.
What If you own your own business? Who decides what my time is worth? I currently own my own business (partially retired) and would much rather spend my "free" time outside doing habitat work than listening to some bs ridiculous lawyer try to free up another punk and keep them them on the streets. I suppose I would want me or someone like me to be a Jurry member if I was falsely accused of a crime but how often does this really happen? Seriously? Mostly we have a group of George Soros DAs trying to keep dirtballs free and on the street and a bunch of normal people trying desperately to avoid wasting their time listening to them.

I never understand why people want to get out of jury duty so badly. To me, it would be like complaining about political leaders and never voting or complaining about traffic while sitting in it, not realizing they are literally traffic. It's a civic duty and part of the social contract. Be the change you want to see in the world.

I have been called 4 or 5 times and always dismissed. Always ticks me off because I think it would be interesting. One was a murder case where the dude killed his girlfriend and was smart enough to stuff her body in the dumpster for their own apartment. Dumb ass prosecutor dismissed me on that one and he had me at hello.. 🤣

A real rocket scientist, and a fine upstanding member of society.

That would be interesting, but to make jurors watch some looser masterbaiting who is already behind bars is unacseptable.

Has to show the video. It sucks but juries are really hard to convince these days. If you don’t show the video the jury will speculate about why it wasn’t shown and what it does or doesn’t show.

Courtrooms are a joke. A search for the truth my ass. Judges for the most part are a joke. Judges are so damn overboard on protecting the rights of the accused that they are tipping the balance. Of course people should get a fair trial but there is always half a book of information about the defendant that the jury never sees because it would “unfairly” prejudice the jury.

In my state we also have a serious lack of prosecutors who know what they are doing. It is a miserable job and to do it right you are going to work 10 hours in the office, go home and work until you go to bed you are going to work on weekends. The legislature has thrown up so many new responsibilities that really require that prosecutors offices be expanded so cases get the attention they need. Your good work is sometimes going to be a losing effort because of dipshit judges, one squirrel on the jury or the appellate court dreaming up reasons to let bad guys go so their name can be on a “landmark “ case.

Why would anyone want to do that.

I do own a small business and I'm supposed to call this sunday after 5:00pm to see if they settled or not. Honestly I don't know how they expect people to even care. Just my feelings about it. If it didn't directly pertain to my life I really don't care about which lawyer is a better actor. I question just how many people are actually qualified to even be on a jury and care about the "service" they are required to do which 90% of the time is more of a pain in the ass for most people. I would just appreciate if they didn't put a target on the backs of the citizens they are forcing to be there. Not a fan. Wife said she "searched" it and they do use peoples names except for a high profile case. If a drive by shooting isn't high profile enough to protect the jurors lives what is? Admittedly I'm living in a real shit hole of a county and it doesn't look like even the judge is qualified or doing right by the jurors. jmho

Last time called in in 2009 or 10. Told them I work nights and would fall asleep. Dismissed.

Way way overdue for jury duty. Went to new county in 2011 and came back in 2018. Might of dodged the clock done that way.

My company doesn’t compensate me for days pulled for jury duty… and the state pays basically nothing, $60 a day.
Unless someone is willing to personally compensate me for the lost income, or pay the bills it causes me to miss, then they have no place judging my desire to get out of it.

I was an alternate on a case years and years ago. It was a dumb case, making terroristic threats. Some dumbass was drunk at a 24 hour diner and started threatening people. Obviously guilty in my mind but I wasn't part of the deliberation since I was an alternate. I didn't bother to stick around for the verdict. A few years later I'm in a local bar shooting pool and realize the guy I'm shooting pool against was the defendant. I almost asked him if they found him guilty but didn't want to start anything. I've been called for Jury duty I think 3 times now but that was the only case I ever actually had to attend.

We get $20 per day here. Something for driving but not sure how much.

This is a fair point about lost wages affecting people's lack of motivation for serving on a jury. You certainly don't have to like doing it. But you also don't have to work somewhere that doesn't include this as a benefit.

never been called for jury duty, but, my son was a victim of a violent crime. He was stabbed in the neck by a black pos trying to steal his truck, left him for dead. was a quadraplegic but is now recovered. long story that would blow your mind with all the twists and turns. person involved ended up on the tv show the first 48, and i went on tv twice doing a crimestoppers bit for an anonymous tip, which ended up working and how we caught the guy. He was a convicted violent felon, had already spent 10 yrs in prison, got paroled, then got arrested for drugs/stolen property 3 months later. He was let go, supposed to show up to a drug court hearing, and didn't. He was a wanted man for a couple of months before he ended up in my driveway and stabbed my son. It took almost a year, around 10 separate court hearings, before it finally got over with. And it didn't even go to trial!

the judicial system was the most surreal thing i've ever experienced. from the very first hearing, when i found out the hearing was about whether the judge even wants to hear the case... i could go on and on. no part of it followed any common sense, or logic, in any way, shape, or form.
I wanted to kill the black mf'er standing 20 feet away from me, I wanted to kill the court appointed defense attorney who was grilling my son like he was on trial, I wanted to punch our assigned DA in the mouth because he was a pussy, I wanted to slap the shit out of the female judge, who was narcissistic. Man, I was literally vibrating with adrenaline, hate, and anger...and couldn't do a damn thing about it. I had no idea the judicial system worked this way, and it still disturbs me greatly to this day.

Is this satire?

@Mtyhunter courtrooms are a joke. They didn’t used to be, but now we are sooooooooooo &%$#$%^$%^ worried about the poor, poor badguy who was minding his business until those bad, bad police officers singled him out for no reason. And we question the victims like they did something wrong when a predator did some kind of crazy violent act.

If we can manage tho get them convicted, well then we gotta give this poor soul a break at sentencing. So he can go out and try to be a productive citizen, like that is going to happen. It blows my mind that these judges see the same people over and over and still won’t air mail them to prison where they can’t bother the rest of us.

We have created a culture of non-compliance. It also doesn’t help that we now have a string of dumbass presidents pardoning people for whole classes of offenses. They all have let people out who should be sitting there thinking “gee whiz. How did I get here. Maybe I should have been at home or working a job instead of making the dumbass decision I made”. Instead, we create even more brazen crooks and dumbasses and they screw up again and the judge cuts them another break. Why? Because bad actions no longer carry penalties.

Really pisses me off.

How hard is it to get the attention of the police in 2026? HOW BAD does your conduct have to be to actually get the attention of a cop? HOW SOLID does a case need to be in 2026 to get a conviction? And then we want to let the worst of the worst get a second chance?

I told you that part of my life to let you know that when/if you even have to serve on jury duty, know that there's a victim in there (like my family) that needs your help to get some justice
It’s our duty to go be a fair juror for sure! Even if it costs us a little in wages.

And maybe be a little skeptical of what paid liar defense attorneys say.
