Native Paw Paw’s?

Dan Maranto

Yearling... With promise
6 years ago I had a select harvest done, and these faster growing trees started showing up, growing in pockets through the woods and at the edge of my yard. thought it was a type of mountain laurel (excuse the ignorance). Until this September I happened to spot some fruit on one, and after some research sure enough it’s paw paw. I’ve never planted one and really never gave them a thought for deer. Are they worth keeping around since there here?

You'll have to try the fruit and decide for yourself on each tree. There is a lot of variation in pawpaws, and I presume that's one reason why they don't have the popularity of other fruits.

I would leave them and hang a camera nearby. I would guess that deer would love the ripe fruit.

Everything in the woods eat them. Most of them in my locale are long gone by deer season.

They will be long gone by deer season I wouldn’t go out of my way to plant them or even protect them if I had something else in mind for an area they are in but I wouldn’t kill them if they where in an area that I had nothing else in mind for either.
