Miscanthus Giaganteus propagation from cuttings.

Pretty good root system growing, I broke some off getting it out but I would say they were 6-8" long.

And they were free, free is good.

As posted above my summer potted cuttings came to life a few weeks ago. I tossed them outside and went on. Finally figured I better get them in the ground.

Good thing, their starting to get root bound in the pots.

Outside plants came to life also.

My outside plants are not awake yet but the cuttings I potted and left in the garage are.

Dipper,
I don't know about all the herbicides Honker suggested but simazine will work like atrazine. Keystone pest supply has it mail order if no one carries it locally.

Bill, do you apply simazine at the same rate as atrazine? How often do you apply during the first year? I killed my sod with gly last fall and hit it again this spring with gly and atrazine right after I planted. Should I plan on spraying with simazine mid summer if weeds/grass are present?

Just read the label for Simazine and it reads like Atrazine, 2 qts per acre on corn and thats the same rate I use for miscanthus. Last year mid summer the ragweed was starting to take over my Miscanthus Screen I did go back and hit it with 2-4,db and Atrazine mixed. The foxtail still came on so I ended up hand weeding it to.

Lickcreek always said it was OK to use up to 4 Qts per acre when establishing switchgrass so I wouldn't be afraid to go a bit more than 2 qts/acre. Just don't spray where runoff might reach a body of water close by. Its not good for fish or frogs. Don't want any 2 headed frogs.

Thanks, I ordered some simazine to have on hand if need be. I don't see myself weeding by hand though......

i picked up 200 rhizomes from Maple Rapids farm on Fri., quite the operation they have there. I plan on getting them in the ground Tues.

Good luck getting them in today.
Don sent me 500 yesterday. Should be arrive on Wednesday.

After this I should be self sufficient. I just need to find time to harvest my own.

Same here, think I have enough. I have palnted 600 over the last 3 years. I'll do some more propagating from cuttings and some splitting of mother plants. Good luck with your 500!

Dumb question....So can you now cut those roots into pieces and bury them in the ground and get new plants, or is it only certain parts of the roots, like near the "crown" of the plant or the tips of the root?

Not sure when they start making rhizomes, the ones I started from cuttings last year still were only roots when I dug them up this spring.

Had family functions today so I didn't get as much done as I wanted, still got 100 rhizomes planted and took some pics of my existing plants.

One of the bigger rhizomes.

This plant had 7 stalks last year and I counted 27 this year. It has really taken off the last couple weeks.

The size of the plant now is about 18-24" around.

Seems maple river farms is like Big Rock trees. There's something extra in the package.

Every bag of 100 rhizomes had extra. I ended up planting 560 today. Alone, and still managed to plant 6 acres of beans.

I've shown this before but if you're planting "a lot" and "in a straight line". A sub soiler is priceless.

On ground pre treated with Gly and atrazine it works wonders. A few passes forward, then back up to open a trench.

Saved my butt a lot of work today. I'm still a sore old dude right now, but it could be worse.

I see why you put straight line in quotes :D

Not that I could do better...I have made just a crooked of line over a shorter distance on my tractor.

There's no straight lines in nature. Embrace it's imperfection. :) Looks darn good by me!

That's a lot straighter than my mg.

Bill thanks for getting me over the mg hump. I read about it a long time, and finally dove in last year. I've put my dipper propagation spin to it, being able to plant a 1000', 2' apart, for $40.
Plus the ability to Plant the same amount next year. I'm really thinking of adding bedding clumps in my nwsg. I should really get into selling it it's so much fun!

I did a couple clumps like this is my NWSG, see how it turns out.

Ha Ha. That's a pretty straight line for driving down hill looking back :D

Using the dipper propagation spin how many could I get next spring.

I'll go into spring with about 30 3 plus year olds, 1000 coming into their 3rd summer and 500 coming into their 2nd summer.

I'd love to have a field of this stuff and I might just do it one of these days.

Dry land swamp would be fun to try. Fyi the areas we sprayed oust over earlier this spring are now growing, so I didn't kill all the mg thankfully

Really great info to know, thank you. Paul was going to try oust on some but I don't think he ever got to it.

I lost about 20% last winter. I'm assuming winter kill. Some we not sprouting so I dug a couple up. There dried out and snap like sticks.
I think maybe I didn't get them deep enough in the rush to plant last spring.

Just noticed these two shoots popping up pretty far from the mother plant. It dawn on me I burried a few severed stalks last August. I just forgot the exact location. Pics of that are back on page 4.

So I dug them up and sure enough that's where they came from. Stalk bending doesn't work unless it's severed from mom.
