Miscanthus Giaganteus propagation from cuttings.

I've got some top growth started on mine as well. Some have roots started, some don't. The ones without roots are still in the water I change every few days.

Still no roots on the ones in the water but a few have top growth. Do I just keep them in the water indefinitely until they grow roots?

Yes. I've had some take up to 5 weeks to "act" alive. Don't give up on them.

Is it too late to stab cuttings into the ground in North MO?

It might be. Early sept frost isn't unheard of. If it's like last year you would be golden, they could grow into Nov.
to be safe I'd start them at home and keep them in the garage for the winter.

MG started off good this spring but when summer got here the rains quit and so did the MG. The last 4-5 weeks we've had decent rains and it still wasn't done for the year.

Both ends of this screen are about 8-9' tall but the middle is 3-5'.

Wonder why the middle didn't catch up? I have few that are stunted but not a whole section like that.

My guess is soil, both ends are pretty decent and the middle is a clay knob, dry. When this was farm field it had a hard time growng anything there also. Next spring I'm going to try Oakseeds suggestion and mulch it and see if that works.

Wow that's crazy. Where can a guy get some of this stuff?

If you want a bunch mapleriverfarms.com is the best place I've found.
If you only need a few to start with shoot me a PM. I have some mother plants at home and should be able to get you a few rhizomes before they wake up.

That's a very kind offer. I checked out Maple River and they are selling individual rhizomes, so I can order a handful from them. They start digging on 4/1. Good timing.

Bill - those look great! Mine look about the same, except I didn't leave that cool looking tunnel in between :| I've been wondering if I'm going to cut mine down or not for the 1st time. Do you (or anyone else) cut the stalks down every year? It reads on their website like we can leave them, but that it's best to cut them. I use them as screening so I'd prefer to leave them. Just wondering what you or anyone else has been doing. This year will be the start of the 4th year for my oldest plantings of them.

I always brush hog them. I'll actually do it this trip if it drys out enough.
Never tried just letting them go. But I guess it couldn't hurt. I just don't need a screen in the spring because if the weather is decent thier usually acting as a screen again by mid June.

Does she come with the grass to plant them? She's kind of cute, I'm sure that's the point!

Bill ... have you seen any issues with the MG spreading beyond where you have planted them?

In 8 years, never. It's bred for biofuel and some smart scientist made the seed sterile. It gets a big bushy seed head but they don't reproduce. I've even tried to plant seed both stratified and just dried. No dice.

The only way it spreads is out. Some of my 8 year olds are about 5 foot in diameter. No need to worry about seed blowing across the street and growing.

My only real fear is disease. Since it's grown from rhizomes thier all clones of the same parent. Hasn't happened yet but the right disease will kill them all.

Planted some rhizome clusters yesterday for the first time, alittle more work, I hope it's worth it. This was about the size of most of them.

Extending the existing MG screen along with some Hybrid willows to the rock in the first pic to the quad in the second.

Bet that puts on more first year growth than a single rhizome.

That's what Don at MapleRiver farms said, great first years growth.
