The fog is intense this am. Neighbor just text and said his grandson shot a “large” antlered deer with his bow and it may have run on my property. We may be having a difficult conversation cause I’m not running all over my property on 11/8

Interesting, I always assumed the doe was controlling the location and not the buck. I have seen them several times out in the open during gun season and buck not leaving her side. I pulled in my driveway one night and buck and doe was lying so close to the road that you could easily see them with road headlights, so I got out and chased them into the woods. Thirty minutes later a buddy called to tell me a buck was laying by the road in front of my house.

You may be more correct on this than I assumed. Assumed the bucks lead this game. But after reading your thoughts I recalled kicking up a buck locked down with a doe a few years back. They were on a little food plot and I got in the stand anyway. 2 hours latter she walked out into the middle of the plot. He stayed on the edge and wouldn’t come into the open. As she moved he skirted the edge and I shot him at 19 yards with a rifle.

Honestly I think the doe probably has more say. If the doe gets up and makes a run for it he is going to follow. However, if she is in the receptive phase and ready to breed he can pretty much bump her to where he wants to go, basically to keep her away from other bucks.

I have been told by Colorado hunter the he believes mule deer bucks will drive or push does coming into heat up the mountain.

I used to hunt in Minnesota near the Carlos Avery. There was a bottom land area that would only hold deer during the rut. It was THE spot during breeding season. But a dismal place to sit if it wasn’t.

Spent the last 2.5 hours going 800 yards in my property trailing a buck we didn’t find. But he was my only real shooter so i have nothing to lose. Good young man so i wanted to find the deer but so far striking out despite som good blood for a while
Edit: to clarify i didn’t shoot this deer. My neighbors grandson did.

I’m really happy I took the time to train my pup to help find them .

Found this book very helpful.

But my pup it seems was a natural and I didn’t do any of the fake trailing.

At first I didn’t but then after about 500 yards it’s starting really pumping good blood and then it just stopped. I’m pretty sure I’ll see buzzards in the next day or two

Loosing one is always heartbreaking. I big one like that really hurts.
