Too warm, but I'm out anyway. Saw 3 turkeys and a mink. No deer yet. There are 3 active scrapes within 50 meters, so hopefully something happens before dark.

Sat this evening for the last 2 hours of daylight. Saw a couple anterless fawns and the one nicer, young buck I have already passed on once this year. Could have shot him at 10 yards tonight. He is tall but not much for width. He is 3 1/2 at the oldest. We will see if he makes it through this season.

Well the wind was swirling, and it was way too warm, but I went out anyway. Surprisingly little sign at my spot, but I threw a bunch of estrus urine around to try to cover my own scent. Finally a little 10 point came in and gave me several opportunities. I went ahead and shot him. It's not the monster buck I hoped for, but it's the second biggest whitetail buck of my life, so I'm happy with him. It's the first deer with my new-to-me crossbow and the new arrows and broadheads. I put a lot of effort into this hunt, so I'm satisfied to have a good result.

Great job. Crossbow hunting is fun.

Nice buck and shot! Very well dialed in

Congratulations on a successful hunt with a new weapon!

Sitting on the lower edge of a saddle with a 5 acre MFR thicket behind me. Hoping to catch a cruiser coming from the bedding on the other side of the ridge. Got busted drawing the bow back on a nice one at 1st light and had a small 4pt within 10 feet. The joys of ground hunting with the longbow. Hopefully I'll get some late morning action.

How regularly do you have success with a longbow while hunting from the ground? That sure does look awfully open for ground bow hunting.

SwampCat, I'll be honest about it... Never.. It's a bucket list thing now. I would have never even considered that spot but I have a spot about 70 yds away in a grapevine cluster and have watched a lot of deer walking through that little 100 yard wide section that I had to give it a go. So far I've seen 5 doe and 6 bucks walk through it in 2 sits.

South wind is no good for any of my stands. Got in a blowdown on the riverbank and hid behind it with the field upwind. Using my phone camera and tripod as a “periscope” so I don’t have to stand up til the moment arises!

Rut report here is lots of young bucks cruising and chasing as usual. I stare and watch the big ones across the property in a sea of CRP that I’m not allowed to hunt. There’s always a chance but after 4 years of hunting this treeline, something’s gotta give!
