Hunting Show Suspended Over Poaching Charges

Is it a lot slimmer or just a lot more competition now? There sure are a lot more products these days. Just thinking out loud here.

more opportunities (there are fewer magazines and paid speaking gigs today, but TV and the net weren't options when I started and there are more companies....making for a substantial net opportunity gain). but the competition is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much greater for those opportunities.

At the risk of sounding SUPER cheesy, you have any clue what it means to me to have hunters of your caliber, guys that for good reason have little to no respect for many in the industry, say stuff like the 3 of you just did? It's humbling, guys. That doesn't do it justice, but it's the best I can do.
I've got a lot of respect for the guys that dig deep into the education and don't try to BS me.

Like this: "Deer of a lifetime." Just pour it on a stump.

Yep I can respect the guys who stay humble and just do it because they love it. Like MO i have a local customer who was trying to get me to lower my prices for one of his celebrity "buddies", in exchange he would introduce me to said celebrity. I said no thanks my mortgage company doesnt care who I know they still want paid each month!

Because most of my pro staff positions are 20+ years in the running, I've got to be pretty good friends with the owners and marketing VPs of them. They tell me all sorts of stuff that makes you scratch your head. Somehow, there's definitely an "entitlement mentality" to a lot of those in my niche. One of the things that always helped me a ton is that I came from a small business setting. I realized that companies in any niche aren't going to stay in business if they don't receive more in return than they give. It's unbelievable how many sincerely believe they deserve money, products and favors, simply because they are on TV (they aren't offering exposure or anything...just give it to them for nothing). I can't wrap my mind around it, but someone must be giving them something for nothing or they wouldn't believe they are entitled.

Egos is in this industry is a real pet peeve of mine. 100% by design, I have it "harder" than anyone I know in a similar niche to me, as I hunt public ground each year and manage the overwhelming majority of private ground I hunt myself, and I can promise you that you'd all kill great bucks if you had it as "hard" as I do. If you do this stuff for a living and have all the advantages we do, there's nothing hard about stacking up bone. Frankly, if you aren't there's something horribly wrong, and it sure doesn't make you special, yet WAY too many sincerely believe they are and somehow really seem not to grasp or just forget all the advantages they have.

I have an idea I have been kicking around and trying to flesh out before committing to moving forward with it. Asked Steve if he would mind discussing it and he was kind enough to take 30/40 minutes out of his day for us to kick through the idea and he did. There was nothing for him to gain by taking my call but he still did and I felt 100% that I got his honest thoughts on not only the opportunities but many potential pitfalls as well.

It doesn't take very long to discern if someone has any substance to them and if you can't tell it from his writing you can certainly tell it from talking with him. Sure can't say that about a lot of the folk I have interacted with "in the industry.

Thanks again Steve for taking the time.

Steve,
I feel your pain when dealing with many in the outdoor media community. I have been in the marine industry for a long time, and have dealt with so-called "Pro Staff" many, many times thru the years. I have met a few, who like yourself, have stayed grounded, humble, and in touch with the true sportsmen and women. I have also witnessed the unbelievable sense of entitlement from guys who have no more chance of making a living in the fishing industry than my dog does. They show up once a year wanting to get their new rigs set up at deep discounts, but when it comes times for the work at shows and promotional events, they are nowhere to be found. It's not surprising that they are frequently pushing a different brand each year. Eventually, the guys with no substance just fade away.

And pursuit is giving Spook a new show! WTF?

Apparently the folks at Pursuit don't have much integrity either. What a joke!

Again. If I'm correct. And I think I am. Pursuit isn't giving dip sh*t a new show. But they are taking his money and airing his show which definitely should be criticized.

You can't make that crap up!

If the viewers of these channels(I am not) would throw a fit over this stuff, maybe some of the many that are waiting to get their shows aired would have a chance. All to sad story is the viewers don't care if they see big bucks on the ground.

Tom Knapp lived close to me, rest his soul.

He was quite a fun guy to talk to.
He used to bich because he would get his hunts paid for, but he had to pay to fly his trophies back to the US and all the taxidermy charges. :)
And man did he despise cameramen. Paraphrased,,,,, "The last thing I am going to do is listen to those a$$holes telling me when I can or cant shoot."

He was very fun to chat with.

It's a vicious cycle of competing for ever greater footage and results to stay relevant, and I think that's what is pushing these guys to bend and deceive as much as they do.

I just wish there were a few more that would try to educate vs just doing horn porn.
