How do I kill volunteer corn in my corn?

The deer didn't do their job. Just finished mowing last years corn stalks and there's lots of corn left.

I wanted to do corn 1 more year before going back to beans. How much problems do you think I'll have with volunteer corn and over crowding?

I could let it sprout and disk it but I hate to disk. This field is in its third year of no til.

Here is why I like no til.
Last years rolled rye that I drilled beans into is still holding moisture for me. And worms and little living creatures I can't name.

How big is the parcel you are talking about?

If you let it sprout, you can spray the whole thing with cleth and crop oil and then plant your new corn.

Bill, what are you using for a drill? I'd like to find a no till drill to help with moisture retention on my sandy soil.

Kl9,
About 4 acres.

wiscwhip,
BINGO, why didn't I think of that. Must be exhaustion :D

Freeborn,
I have a Great Plains 606NT pull type. Perfect for for food plots. Not so perfect on the pocketbook. I've had it 6 years and still cringe at the price. But I have to say it's the best tool on my place. Land pride markets the identical unit for less $$. Wasn't and option when I bought.

It will continue to sprout for 3 months. That won't work if you want to plant in a timely fashion. If it is Conventional corn, plant RR corn, If it is RR corn without the liberty link gene, plant liberty link corn. Otherwise if none of those ideas will work, moldboard plow it under 6 inches deep and don't worry about it!

I didn't really think about it like that MO, but you are absolutely right. Now that you mention it, I have seen where the seed on the cob will continue to germinate for weeks.

Why would there be any problem leaving it? It's just corn with corn I don't see the harm in it.

The old school way = hoe!
Newer way = row cultivator
My way = F it!

I may go the Buckly, j-bird way. F-it.

Thanks for the info MO. I talked to the closest Liberty link supplier today. He highly recommended a separate sprayer for liberty stuff and gly stuff in the same year.

Apparently Liberty is deadly in small quantities.

I don't know maybe I should go all Liberty. Got to think about it. Pigweed is creeping towards gly resistant so maybe Liberty is the smart way to go for a few years.

No need for a different sprayer, use tank cleaner and triple rinse, no problem.

Liberty is good, but can be weak on lambsquarters.

Just out of curiosity, why didn't you just leave the corn standing another year?

That is what I have done. It can become great cover. Or just take out part of it.

Good question and an idea I had not even thought of.
To close to the road. It had thinned out enough that it wasn't much of a road screen. I planted miscanthus last spring to be a permanent screen. It won't be a mature enough until next year. Which is why I was hoping for corn 1 more year. I could use a row of Sudan behind the miscanthus but I'm starting to dislike the way Sudan re seeds itself.
