Found an American Chestnut...nevermind, it's Horse chestnut.

So we were out hiking around some State Land this weekend, and looky what I found. It's off the Ice Age Trail a bit in a pretty popular recreational area.

Not big, but its probably pushing 20ft. I didn't notice any stump it shot up from, and I also didn't see any signs of cankers on it. It didn't have any nuts, but there probably isn't another chestnut around to pollinate with.

I will make a point to go out and check on it every once in a while.

Just thought some of you guys would like it.

Looks like a buckeye to me ? Hope I'm wrong, leaves just don't look right to me.

horse chestnut.......

Chestnut leaves you be more slender and pointy versus fat and rounded as shown correct?

horse chestnut.......

You are correct. Looked in my book at work this afternoon, American Chestnut doesn't have a terminal bud....horse chestnut has large, shiny and sticky terminal bud.

I was trying to ID quick it on my phone before we left, which gets crappy service out there, could've missed the "horse" part or was looking at a crappy source.

Both are pretty rare trees in these parts, especially outside of the landscaped areas.
