5 year old buck +
Absentee land management? "No till", no nothing.
I edited the first two posts to change this intro to better explain my situation.
20 some odd acres of overgrown mess in central NY.
Sandwiched between open field and seasonal houses, not all of it is really huntable. It's property I've had access to off and on my whole life, but have only recently come to own. In my youth it was 3/4 open "lawn" with a small cottage, 1/4 woods, with some mixed briar and brush in between. Today the house is gone, the lawn is down to 1/2 acre or so of over grown mess. The old growth open woods were thinned/logged 30+ years ago and has filled in. All the open spaces have filled in as well. So it's mostly dense, relatively new growth trees. It's a mess.
My situation: My property is 5 hours from where I live, and an awful drive to boot. How many times a year I get there is dictated by regular life constraints, but quite honestly, more by the condition of my automobile at the time. Over my life visits have ranged from twice a year to a dozen. These days I get about 5-6 trips a year. Two of those are hunting, so no real work gets done. Some I'm accompanied by family, so little work gets done.
I have a chainsaw, a weed whacker and a leaf blower. That's the entirety of my equipment. (and I can't even leave them there, I have to bring them each time and there isn't always room for all three) No tractors, no side by sides, no quads. Not even a pickup truck or a lawn mower. You can tell by now I'm working with a really big budget lol. When I say "no till" I mean it, broadcast on to the untouched ground, other than maybe blowing off some leaf litter if I can (not always), that's it. (That used to drive me crazy seeing YouTube videos, "Make a food plot with no equipment." And then the guy rototills it and spreads seed with his quad. Say what??)
This isn't meant to be a "woe is me" post, but more to show people there's still things you can do without all the extras. "The pioneers did it without tractors!" yeah, but they had livestock and the weren't hacking a homestead out of the wilderness four weekends out of the year.
Since I've been a member here I've been contacted a couple times by people asking questions, saying their situation is like mine and saying the same thing I've felt at times. There's good people here, wealth of knowledge and lots to be learned, but most of what's here just isn't relevant to me. I hope they stuck around and are still here, because there is a lot to be learned. Yes there's multi property professionals here with thousands of acres they're dealing with, and more "regular" folks living relatively near or on their property, but there's also people like me.
