Kooch,

No turning point in the order? That's a well liked one from chainsaw. PArent tree is about 30 miles away from my camp.

Sandbur,

There's a lot to complain about in NY. However, you can get 5 deer tags and like 4-5 months to use them. If you're not sick of being out in the cold by then, PA is right next door with January flintlock season. 3 tags for out of state folks for only $126. Their public land has food plots! And they manage their forestland logging to favor wildlife too.

One of the best apples out there, Granny Smith. It was a seedling that grew in a compost pile.
I can get 3 tags here plus a free landowner tag if I allow public hunting. I don’t. Then two more antlerless tags for a special season.

I feel our management areas are not managed for deer but are managed for what someone feels the area looked like about 200 years ago.

Just for further reference on Kerr - ours at camp are in an ideal situation. All day sun, gentle south-facing slope, good soil, good drainage, caged & screened. But Kerr seems to grow slower and not get as tall as some other trees. FWIW.

This might interest folks following sandbur's interests.

I feel kerr is a lot like whitetail crabs keepsake. I wonder what happens if you plant the graft deep. If I recall you need at least 4 inches below for it to become a seedling.

I'm getting good growth on my kerr trees. I have a couple on antonovka planted in 2018 that are about 14'. They're still putting on good growth (about 1.5' per year) despite being loaded with fruit. Coons found them a few weeks ago and striped them in a couple of nights.

I see they don’t mention Haralred. I prefer it over Haralson. I think Haralred was not from the U.

Good to hear. I wish I had them on a different rootstock than B118.

I have a couple of seedlings planted in the woods/old clearing up north. I think it is coons that got to them. Cages are collapsed as well. Some matted down areas under the tree.
