Crabapple timeline

Years ago, I got paid to do small game hunting at a local apple orchard. $5 per squirrel. Lots of squirrel chili for a few years. They have trouble holding onto the apples. take a few bites and move onto another. Lots of losses for orchard owners, much worse than bears or deer..

The antonovka graftings. Anything that jives well with the rootstocks? I am grafting for my home in 5a and putting some up in the adirondacks in zone 3A. Thinking 1/2 of the home and up north ones will be freedom. They're a anty crossed with maucon. The other half was thiking some sort of crabapple. Getting enterprise, liberty, crossbow, 30-06, and hopefully a droptine or two sometime this month. Rototilled and dug down the taproot center of the new spots yesterday, as well as transplanting some bareroots back to the nursery spot.

Trailman on Anty from SLN has done well.

Dumb question here, can you graft an apple or applecrab to a crabapple seedling?

I started my post firearm season scouting today.

Topworks from last spring were ignored. I should have slit the tape or taken it off earlier. This is an area where I don’t go from about Aug 1 until after the firearm season.

First fruit on this dolgo seedling. I should probably put a name on it.

Seedling I call Sour Dog. I lost parentage ID but suspect a chestnut crab background.

Two seedlings with no name.

I have another seedling that has first fruit at about two inches and is still holding. These three trees are from wild crabs.

Where can someone get ahold of a Yellow Dog?

Chris’s trees at Turkey Creek has excellent trees I’ve bought several from him the last two springs and they have done well for me. I’ve got another small order in with him for this coming spring because I’ve been so pleased with his trees. I order mine on M111.

I can agree 100%. Everything from Chris has been excellent. Best root systems I've seen.

Does Turkey Creek get back to you soon? I tried ordered some entriprse, big dog, and dolgo for myself and some coworkers. Ordered (2) M111 big dogs for me.

Usually by the next day when I email him

Here’s a photo taken today of a black squirrel feeding on Signal Fire fruit. I don’t recall ever seeing them in any of my other crabs.

Maybe Signal Fire fruit is sweeter than most of my other crabs (although it is not as sweet as Kerr). It is edible, it’s not a spitter. There is some underlying sweetness, and some tart.

But I wouldn’t walk very far out of my way to eat them.

Very cool!

sandbur, Do you give out any scions? Would love some trailman.

Oaknut,

That is the apple of my eye. To harvest a large black squirrel and have it mounted. With my iron sighted CZ ultra lux. The fox squirrel body molds are too big for an average grey squirrel. I'd rather have that than a nice 12 pointer on my wall.

It seems like the body of the black squirrels I see are slightly smaller than the average grey. Does anyone else notice this?

I have a lot of black squirrels around me. I think they are about the same size as a grey squirrel. I think this winter after deer hunting I am going to thin them out, I think they have been striping the apple trees of apples.
