Chicken Coop Crab

greyphase

5 year old buck +
I've been watching this crab that's growing in the corner of our chicken yard for several years now. Seems to be a reliable producer while growing in a shady location. It drops its fruit over a long period of time starting in Sept and is still holding about 1/2 of it's crop. Although the deer can't get at it's fruit the chickens eat them as soon as they drop. I tried one and they are sweet for a crab with no bitter taste.

If anyone wants scion from this crab for next springs grafting drop me a pm.

That looks like a beaut, Rick. The extended dropping time is a good trait. Might drop you a PM on that one.

A side note - the yellowish-green late hanger at camp I sent you scion from is still holding lots of apples as of 11-4. I found a big scrape under it this past weekend. Apples are hard and are more tart than sweet, though there is some sweetness.
