I pass on wild pork.Nice work? You going to eat them?
You should save the tusks for a decoration.
My buddies use foxpro x24.
I’m an icotec guy. Use the night stalker+ and love it. Tony tebbe full sets have been good to me.
Never had much luck with it. But I will say bait works so good with them you don’t really have to call them. You ever try calling hogs? I have a Convergent Bullet ecaller. I've yet to try it.
I got several cases of that tula ammo in 7.62x39 when it was $125-$140 a case of 1000. Those days are long gone.I sync'ed the scope and ballistics app on the phone (pretty easy). After completing the break-in process, I used the one-shot zero and am ready to go.
The best way to get started night hunting would be to go with someone who is using them....however, my coyote and pig shooting friends are on the other side of the state, and I am hoping to use the gun before going out with them. Athlon has some good videos to walk one through the process.
The ones I am using are older Herter's made by Tula (Russian). You are correct, the bullet is a 55 grain lead core surrounded by a copper plated steel jacket. These work well for chrome lined bore break-in.
Most (if not all) brass cased Herter's branded ammo is currently made by Winchester.
USDA hog trappers wiped them out here. Went from killing maybe 50 a year to two hog pics in last 18 months. We have killed as many as 153 in six months. I figured it would be three or four months before they started showing back up - but I was wrong. I miss them![]()
Our hosts in Oklahoma informed me that our Boars & Beards hunt may be more beards, as the USDA has eliminated most of the sounders. Much like Mtyhunter noted, a few show up a nights and an occasional straggler can be found, but the days of guaranteed kills and sounds of a hundred are over, which is good for the farmers and landowners.Your story is the about the same as mine. My son and I have shot so many hogs that we quit keeping count, but I'd guess maybe 30-50 a year for 5 years or so, and most of them shot during the daytime.
We realized we still were not making a big impact on their numbers, and the only way to keep them away was to not bait with corn. 2 seasons of no corn, and we were not dealing with pigs. It actually was nice not to have to purchase and mess with baiting, and we still had the same success with deer without baiting. At this point, we only sprinkle some corn in front of the many cams we out, just to get them to stop long enough to get their pic taken.
It really hard now to find them, especially in the daytime. About once a year now, they'll show up and I'll usually hunt and kill the big boar. I used to tell ppl who wanted to hunt them with me how easy it was. Drive down Friday night, throw some bait out, and hit it Saturday and I'd guarantee at least 1 shot. It's not that easy now, which is fine with me.
However, even with all the aggravation they cause, I kinda miss them a little myself!
there are still plenty of coyotes. It appears we'll be spending more time looking for bearded birds than boars
