Air Layering

I'm over buying root stock unless it's a tree I don't have. I have some plums and peaches getting on in age as well as some oak and other natives I was thinking of either grafting or cutting and planting (I forget what this is called).

I stumbled upon this technique called Air Layering which seems like a quicker way to start a "clone" then planting a cutting. Has anyone found success or not with this technique?

video here for what it is:

I think that's a fig in the video. It's not as easy with apples and plums, but you can stump layer them.
