Winter Wildlife Crab

greyphase

5 year old buck +
Old reliable, even after surviving a bear "pruning" which took almost half the tree. Antonovka rootstock, planted 2005. It always has a good crop. Only downside is it holds it's fruit almost too long with some dried crabs hanging on into spring.

How big do those crabs get and are they edible?

This ones on my list of trees to plant. I Like seeing all your fruit tree pics Grey, thanks for sharing them!

Just curious where you purchased the wwc? I have these up at the top of my wishlist for fruit trees.

Their a thumbsized crab, and I never tried to eat one.

St. Lawrence Nursery has them.

I planted one in the spring of 2015 and it has grown as good as any of my 70+ trees and better than most. Mine is probably well over 12 ft high already and has well over a hundred apples on it this year

I have grafted a lot of these. They produce early and often and are some of the most vigorous trees I have. Really well formed and easy to train.

I also have (2) dandy #5 crabs in my Nursery. They are huge. Going to the farm next year for sure.

I planted several WWC's at camp too. Very vigorous. Ours went from a 3" whip to 6 to 7 ft., multi-branched trees after 2 years. A couple first fruits this year - 2 or 3 on a tree. From SLN on Antonovka. I think the Winter Wildlife crab and the All-Winter-Hangover crab are SLN introductions only they have. Both great trees in our experience.

Ed, could you tell us more about your dandy #5 crabapples? Where do you get those?

I send CrazyEd some scion of the #5 crab. It's a wild crab growing on my land that the deer visit every night in the fall. Here's some pics I took back in 2015. It's showing a tendency to bear heavily every other year.

Looking good Rick! I grafted (2) of those last year from the wood you sent and they are both all of 6' tall and well feathered.

Great looking #5 tree, Rick !! I might have to bum a stick from you come spring. Can't have too many good crabs !!

Charman - Another one bites the dust !! ^^^^^^ Grafting is fun and pretty cool to get involved with. If you have time to graft and grow some trees, you can get some good scion from guys who swap it and it saves $$$.

That #5 tree really does look good. How is it for disease resistance ?
I might have to bum a few scions.

It shows little disease damage. Give me a shout in late winter and I'll send some scion to you.

Is anyone growing WWC or All Winter Hangover in zones 3 or 4 ?

You could probably make a fortune selling these trees

I’ve got both in 4a. Both planted 2016 from SLN. WWC has done great. AWC has been slower but still coming along. Both got a good pruning this spring.

Out of all the trees I grafted this spring, Winter Wildlife is the first one waking up and show signs of life. 2DBE01E8-C3E1-4FAF-AD9B-595D2BEDDA86.jpeg
