Who drives to their stand?

WeedyJ

5 year old buck +
Who drives motorized or electric vehicles to their stand? My ex brother in law, an excellent deer hunter, always drove us to our stands years ago on his place, and drove himself to the stand. The few times I have done that, I have seen deer. Wonder if it's not so spooky, and would maybe leave less of MY scent as a trail.

I think in the right situation it can be very effective on my personal farm it would blow the place up. Main ag country ride in on a tractor drop off deer probably won’t be any the wiser. Have known of several hunters that do it. I have done it on occasion especially during harvest season.

A guide on the former forum has a lot of ground next to oil wells that see a lot of traffic he drops everyone off from his truck no exceptions.

I have two friends that have electric bicycles and ride them right under the stand along field edges. Both shot mature bucks this year with the bicycle under the stand. I am trying to spin the need for a 3k bicycle to the wife as I have some 1 mile walks it would be really really handy.

Walked the last 20 days to all of my stand with a 15-20 lbs back pack plus gun for morning and the afternoon sit.

Each walk out was 1/4 to 1/3 of a mile through less than desirable stuff, and I am am old fuccur. I also have stage 3 Osteoarthritis in my right knee and had knee surgery 6 months ago in my left ... wtf LOL!!!!

I should say. I wouldn’t drive to a stand in the timber. Just to the edge.

I was parked 50yds (100yds from the house) from where I shot my deer this yr. I didn't walk because they are used to morning traffic on our driveway and not human traffic before daylight. Another spot i hunt is a 2 mile walk. Depends on the situation. I've watched many deer step into the brush as the rancher drives by at 10yds, and go on full alert when a strange vehicle goes down the highway a half mile away.

I started seeing a lot more deer when I started walking to my stand instead of taking the ATV. I initially drove the ATV to my stand because there is a guy who regularly drives that road with and ATV to pump the oil wells. But I think the deer there just don't get used to it for whatever reason.

Also, the slower I walk, the more deer I see. Walking too fast has cost me at least three nice bucks in that spot.

Our preferred method is to have someone drop us off and pick us up. If I am out hunting by myself, I may drive the utv to a spot near the stand that is not in view with where I anticipate movement to be coming from.

Since we are on the subject, what's the consensus on electric vs. gas utv/atvs in terms of scaring deer more? I have seen them slowly move off as the louder gas engine gets closer, and then immediately reenter the field once it's gone. Is there some benefit to have more noise coming and going, as opposed to an electric vehicle that you could sneak up on them and potentially startle them more?

A lot of factors....

Electric or Gas? UTV or Bike? Location of stand? Type of stand?

On average, I'd say the closest I will park is approximately 200 yards from a stand. That is with an electric UTV. On our farm, there are 4 different "parking spots" we use.

If they are used to it I don't care how loud/clanky/diesel smelling it is. If they aren't used to it, it won't matter how quiet and clean it is. Deer are cautious of new things.

My thought is that I am , at least weekly year round, driving something around

I do not...we will use the UTV to go get the deer once down...Last year I upset my father when on the first day of the hunt his buck ran into our sanctuary to die. When we found it he told me to dress it and he would go get the buggy. I told him nah....were dragging him to the lane were not driving that thing in here. My man got so pissed he didn't hunt with me again that year. I didn't even make him drag either he just had to carry my gun while I drug it. So funny.

My FIL and my wife hunted a food plot about 250 yds behind our house, for several years I would take them back and drop them off and go on my way to my stand. One years I had to work a midnight the night before opening day so they drove out to the blind in his Expedition and parked right behind it. I came home and saw the truck right behind the blind and thought they'll never see anything and went to bed for a short nap before heading out hunting. About 9:30 I got a text that my wife had shot one and later that day my FIL shot one also. So after that they have driven something to that blind truck, SUV or now a UTV and it never has really bothered them at this blind. Aall the other blinds and stands I'll drive part way back and park and walk the rest of the way.

We try to pick up guys hunting field edges in the evening. Better to bump them off with the quad, the cameras say they're back within 20 minutes.

No better way to booger them than have them watch you leave the tree. That's what burns a spot, IMO

If I'm hunting a field edge in the evening, I'll walk in and have my Dad pick me up at dark in the ranger. it moves the deer off the field, let's me climb down unobserved, and gets me back to the house for dinner faster.

We actually text each other from stand if we need rescuing at the end of the day. If one of us can get out without busting deer all over thats the instant driver. Like has been said. I’ll take running them off with a machine over having them watch climb down any day.

I barked at a couple does one evening this season. Sometimes that works. Other time like this one, they actually walked over to see why a dog was up a tree:emoji_rolling_eyes:

My entire property is timber of some sort. Lots of neighbors drive 4 wheelers to their stand but I walk every time. My access is all low to high and my typical walk to the tree is 3-500 yards with an elevation increase of 275-450’. I’d love to drive but on my place walking is the better option.

An ebike is on my short list, hopefully I’ll pick one up in 2021.

I use a green Lazer pointer to move deer off the plot or out of the area if I'm hunting by myself or am the one to go get the utv. I've learned it's better to have a lazer that you can actually see the beam, and shine the beam above the deer's heads in the air. Shining it on the ground at their feet does nothing. Typically they don't even blow or flag and just trot out of the area, allowing you to get out quietly.

Have a link to the one you have? This sounds like a fantastic idea if it works.

Can you elaborate on this?
