Scott's habitat improvements

I need to put some MG in fields. So much to do and so little time.....

things are looking good.

Looking very good!

Along with oaks growing out of the tree tubes I have a bunch of 2-4 yr old conifers that are above the grass now and the seem for be really taking off this year.

I planted my brassica plots TnM, I picked up a 6' finish mower that seems to leave a more even mulch/thatch layer.

Sorghum mix plot planted first part of June is just starting to take off, we didn't get much rain after this was planted. I'll probably go in and mow some of the bare spots and TnM cereal grains.

First time I've seen berries on these Highbush Cranberry bushes, maybe I'll start seeing some propagation from nature.

Some of my apple trees are doing well and most are just ok, I've watered them a couple times but we've been pretty dry here and the fruit is fairly small.

I hinged these Ash trees in Jan of 2015 and most are hanging on, I thought with the Emerald Ash borer they wouldn't last long. Quite a few beds under there from what I can see from the outside.

I think I saw an “Ultimate deer bed” in that post... :)

Things look real good around there Scott

Looks great! Nice fruit set, I'm ready for my cranberries to start fruiting...everything got hit with late freeze down here in may.

Planted my LC rotation cereal grains on 8/31 and came back the next day and planted my clover mix. I mowed, lightly disced spread cereal grains disced them in and cultipacked, spread the clover mix and cultipacked gain. We had some timely rains the first week but not much since just the heavy dews, they are looking desent even though lack of moisture.

My sorghum and brasssica plots didn't turn out to be much this year beacuse lack of moisture, clover picked up the slack. I mowed the brassicas and replanted with cereal grains.

looks good scott ! the apple trees look awesome. sweet pics of the bucks fighting

Went back yesterday and frost seeded some CIR into bare spots and was going to frost seed some clover but there ws still 6-8" of snow so I'll wait a couple days and try it again.

Lots of my conifers are above the grass now so they should start to really take off.

Over the last few years I've hinge cut a lot of small Ash trees thinking that they would eventually die from EAB anyways and I planted red cedar and norway spruce in and around these downed Ash. The hinge cut acts as a cage and gives them a fighting chance or they will get rubbed.

Existing clover polt is about the only thing that's green now, rye is still under snow but it should only be for a couple more days with temps in the 50's.

Really sad about the elm trees. The GEB is in the county north of us so I'm sure its only a matter of time.

Yea I guess I didn't realize how many Ash trees we had until this, the only good thing is areas like this are now really thick with new growth.

It’s amazing the deer haven’t gotten after your small conifers that are out in the open. The deer are just mean here on mine where they can get to them. If they don’t rub them they try and eat them without some kind of protection.
A little fertilizer thrown down close will really make the trees jump now that they are started good.

They do get after them I'd say my survival rate is around 50%, a couple year ago I planted plugs and they walked down the line of plugs and pulled just about everyone out and they were laying on top of the ground.

they did that to me once. But I did t find them until they were dried out sticks....

Recieved my 12 apple trees from Tuckeycreek and got them planted. The trees looked good like always.
6- Liberty
3- Dolgo
2- Hewes
1- Trailman

Need to get pea stone and some fencing, had some smaller cages to put on them until I get the fencing.

Hopefully some of my trees are waking up. I’ll find out next week who lived and who died :emoji_head_bandage:
