Received first tree order with great disappointment

As you can see from the post above, when I inquired from Fedco about why they were so small they said they are “organic” and size varies from year to year. To me “organic” and fruit trees means WE ARE TOO CHEAP TO BUY FERTILIZER :)

Fedco can tell it walking. I will never buy from them. Their wording was way too hostile and unprofessional.

People grow the trees. People make the difference.

Shame to hear about really small stock from SLN. As long as a tree has decent roots, it should do ok but you just lost a year or two compared to what you were expecting. I'm sure all the small nurseries have the same pressures to be profitable. If SLN had a large number of small trees, he should have kept them for another year but that means no cash flow. The next best thing is to sell them at reduced prices rather than disappoint your customers. SLN is new ownership and might not be in business if he can't turn trees into cash. But disappointing customers won't keep you in business for long either. It's not like he didn't know what his stock was before he started taking orders, same for Fedco. You can't expect customers to pay full price for this stuff.

I just emailed SLN requesting refund on broken tree and clarification if this is how his trees are to be going forward. $30 for a tree the size of a pencil is not going to do it for me. I can be very certain that most of these will have issues with next years snow pack.

I will wait til midweek to email them. I have a feeling they will have a lot of emails Monday morning.

Happy with the 14 I got from SLN
Although not as big as the ones I got locally at the c district.
It is understandable, they didn't have to be shipped as far.
Or be pruned back to be sent.
Only trade off was not positive on what rootstock their on.
Know it's on a standard size but nothing specific.

Probably Antonovka, according to their website.

I ordered ten Antonovka seedlings from them.

Chummer,

Don’t your trees need to start out as decent size redwoods just to have a fighting chance :). Someone said it might be hard to make a profit. I don’t understand that part, but I do understand the part that said if you market a nice size bare root tree, price it as a nice size bare root tree and then ship a pencil you are going to loose customers.

Wow I didn't expect these kind of reports about SLN, I just assumed they would have some seriously gawdy northern stock. Disappointing for sure!

I have had a few snap in half at the 3-4' range when they get swallowed by the snow pack. Part of the reason I went with SNL was their trees were bigger and out growing the Cummins trees. Cummins botched my order last year so I went with SNL this year. My guess is these nurseries just don't get excited about orders of 10-20 trees. Service is one thing but if everyone is getting inferior product they won't be in business long.

The trees I got from SLN were 3' to 4' and were in good shape. I only ordered 4 this year because I'm running out of places to plant more. 2 were whips and 2 were slightly feathered. I have no complaints about SLN. They were bundled together with wet wood chips / sawdust, bagged tightly and wrapped securely.

The new owner of SLN - Connor Hardiman - worked for SLN for 5 years when the MacKentleys still owned it. When they retired, he bought it. I know for a fact he didn't offer as many varieties of fruit trees, shrubs, and nut / timber / yard trees because he's trying to get his feet under himself and build his stock. It may be another year or 2 before he really gets rolling, I'm guessing. Connor told me in an e-mail that they're grafting more of the crabs that they are known for to have ready for the 2019 season. I'm hoping he has great success. SLN has been too good of a nursery to let die.

I've stated this before, but all the trees I've ordered over the past 5 years from SLN, ACN, or Cummins have all been great trees. Apple Junkie's pix on post #69 are just like the ones I've received from SLN, ACN, and Cummins over those years. I'll order from them again with no hesitation - I just need to find more space !!!!

I got a very rapid response and refund from SNL. The explanation leaves a little to be desired. They state I received at least three year old trees. If that is the case the last trees I got from them were 10 years old. I probably will not order from them again.

That is a pretty good one :). 10 year old bare root trees :)

Could you expand on that?

I just ordered 10 fruit trees from them 2 months ago, and their customer service was great, and their trees look great! Every one of them appears to be waking up nicely.

What’s the bad rep from?

Yes I’m asking about Morse, and Looks like I have a lot of reading to do!

Thank you!

Well I emailed SLN about my order which was placed on 12/19/17 and I was advised that they didn't have the trees. 4 Kerr, 2 All Winter Hangover and 2 Viola crabs. I have been given the option of waiting until next year or getting a refund. I am not very happy and will be getting a refund, they have sat on my $300 long enough. These were the first trees I ordered, every other nursery has shipped what I ordered well after this order and they are in the ground. Every tree on the website was listed in stock when I ordered and it was several weeks after until any of the trees were listed as out of stock so I have my own opinion of what has happened here. This was my first order with SLN and will be my last. I have never had an issue with Cummins, ACN, Vintage Virginia Apples or Fedco and will do my business there in the future. My Fedco trees were small compared to what I am used to but at least I got them. Not sure why it took until almost May and me sending an email today to get this news. Not the first time someone who is great at what they do not being able to handle the business end of things, this looks like the case here. It is what it is and anyone reading this can take the information for what it's worth. I hope SLN gets it figured out, I honestly do.

No real sure what to think at this point, was trying to hold off, but the facts r proving otherwise.

Ordered through SLN on the first day they posted online sales.
Was givin no indication they were going to be shipped, sent them April 2 during a whiteout an frost of over 34 inches in the ground. Held them for over three weeks till I was able to plant on Monday. Out of 14, 1/3 were marginal for the price paid, 1/3 were ok but pencil diameter, the other 1/3 had little to no root system/severally broke tap root.

Was able to purchase a 7/8 in diameter 5ft fully feathered standard honeycrisp from the local conservation district for 2/3 the price I paid SLN half a year later.
So yeah, that ant rootstock better pay off in the long run.
Guess I got the time, will find out exactly how long till it pays off.

Still waiting on their email reply, took pics of the one that I know will not make it cause the main root was split about up to the graft Union.

On a side note, just planted 6 today from our very own turkey creek
All I can say is wow, what a root mass,
Could only fit 4 of his compared to all 14 of SNLs in the pre soak tank.

I emailed SLN about my order. I will update if/when I hear from them.
