J-birds place

Now for the videos....after looking and looking we are certain these are two different 10 point bucks...appear to be a little young but lots of potential (and fit our harvest guidelines). Sorry no new sightings of the freak.

The date and time is not accurate obviously.... This scrape is seeing all the activity at night, but at least it gives me an idea of what is out there. Per the date stamp on all the buck videos we have a visit at 2/22 at 10 am, again on 2/23 at 12:10 am, then the video shown on 2/25 at 2:10am (notice his left side G4 is pretty short), then he shows up again on the same day at 2:50am, then the other buck shows up o the same day at 6:52....

I also did a little experiment in my north corner plot. Someone had asked if it was too late to fertilize a plot. I had roughly a 5 gallon bucket of triple 10 sitting around so I went and applied it to a section of my north corner annual plot. Not sure it will do much, but we will see. I just spread it by hand...I figured...I wasn't going to hurt anything and maybe we learn something....

Does are frightened to visit a field on my farm. The middle schoolers are chasing them. :).

I have seen some of the less experienced boys out as well....but the ones who know are still just keeping tabs from what I can tell. I suspect things will change here over the next 2 weeks or so....

I was out again this evening (10/31) and had 6 does work past. 3 mature does and 3 young ones...I could have forced a shot but I was hoping they was being followed....no such luck. Was nice to see them work out into the plot however...

I’m headed back on Friday. Be on stand Saturday..
Hopefully some chasing starts and those does bring the boys.

That was why I waited as well....I was hoping they would have some company....they didn't. We will start seeing some real activity here pretty soon....just gotta be in the right place at the right time.

So I had an interesting sequence captured on a cam card....

Notice the date and time stamp....they are accurate.... The two nicer bucks I have captured before....

Buck #1..
Buck #2..
Buck #3..

I did get out saturday morning....but man it was hot (same spot as in post #905) I seen a small basket buck and 3 does....no shooting....

been having highs of nearly 80 the past few days.....general firearms season (and my vacation) start saturday!!!

Forecast here is high near 75 again today and it's gusting pretty good at the moment as well, but rain moving in tonight....then we drop to more seasonal temps (highs in the upper 50's with lows in the 30's. Tomorrow morning would be a great time to be in the stand, but I gotta work.... I got 2 weeks coming...starting saturday. My boy has this next week off and my youngest is virtual learning from home as well.....so we should be able to talk a few into giving up.

Pulled this sequence off my trail cam as well. First time I have captured this on cam before.

First video you can see the one buck is all bristled up....

Second video the pushing takes place....nothing major....just interesting....

Opening day of firearms season here today...

opening morning.jpg
All three of us went to the "battle wagon" this morning...we had a good frost over night. We saw deer, and some chasing going on but no shot opportunities....

The evening hunt was the boy and I and we went to another shooting house. Seeing lots of other orange hats around....more so than normal. We saw deer, but again no shooting...

Supposed to be windy tomorrow - 20 mph steady with gusts of over 40....not sure how that will pan out. We will see what tomorrow brings...

Well if you believe in the sort of thing...I had a little divine assistance this morning....

I was the only one to get up this morning so I decided to go to a stand that hasn't been hunted yet. I had two options and wasn't sure which one to go to0 SO I am having this discussion in my head on the dark as I am walking across the field. Then...I see what I thought was a shooting star. It was straight overhead and headed right to one of the 2 stands I was considering. Well who is going to argue with a hint like that?!?

So I settled in and was feeling pretty good. It was roughly 30 out with a light breeze in my face....

So here is my set-up and my westerly view

So I am expecting the deer to come from the west from the thick area west of the cut beans of my stand with them either hitting the plot to simply crossing the field to access the standing corn... It had been cold so I figured the deer would be seeking the corn... They like the low spot you can see in the pic of my view in the field so I was watching that area pretty closely.

Well about 8:30 I am none to happy because my bullet proof plan was failing. I had seen 1 deer that was 300+ yards away all morning.... I stood up to stretch a bit and to look around and take a peek at the standing corn. I had been keeping an eye on it as well just in case, but still had not seen anything.

Then a deer pops out of the corn in the neighbors field....I could see it had a rack and was a decent deer. I thought for sure he was going to go right to the other stand I was considering. But instead he didn't. Now the property line from my stand is roughly 200 yards. That's not a shot I am willing to take off-hand. So I had to wait.... and sure enough the buck takes a route like he is heading to the low area in my field. I popped him the first time at about 100 yards and he mule kicked and started trotting.... I was leading him ready to take another shot when he stopped. He didn't go down so I popped him again. That dropped him! After gutting both shots where lung shots and one nicked the heart.

He isn't the biggest buck, but he fits our harvest rules (wide as his ears) and we need to fill a freezer. Clean 8 points, 16" outside and live weight of 215. He isn't one of the bucks we had our eye on, but sometimes you take what the good lord provides. Maybe one of my kids gets a bigger one or they live another year and we get to chase them again next year....who knows.

I just realized I skipped yesterday's hunts. The morning hunt was windy and wet...thankfully I have a shooting house. I saw 5 deer total but no shooting as 2 neighbor dogs came thru and blew the deer out of the nearby bedding area I was watching.... The dogs got a pass this time.... I was so hopeful as the rain let up a little after sunrise and the wind wasn't too bad.

The afternoon hunt...I took the daughter back to the battle wagon we saw 2 deer at well over 200 yards away ...and an 11 turkey parade!

Congrats on the successful hunt! Buck looks real nice with attractive tines. Meat in the freezer!

Thank you! Yep...not a monster, but with an empty freezer it was tough to be too picky. He was the first real opportunity at a harvest this year so I took it. I'll let the kids chase the bigger ones...or maybe they even make it another year...who knows. We go thru 3 to 5 deer a year so we still got more to get, but he was a nice start.

Heck yeah, that's a great start. My family always just hopes 1 of us gets a nice buck, doesn't matter who. My dad wants it to be me and I want it to be him. But that's just a bonus. The goods are the chops n steaks! I'm sure you guys will have another update soon. Got any other pics of your buck?

Congratulations! Looks like a good one to me. Should have been Emma shooting, but I’ll give you a little credit :emoji_stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I just swung by for an update after posting my harvest in my tour thread and couldn't be happier for you bud!!! Heck yeah! Congrats!!!!
