Gardening

Could someone spec out an efence for about. 50x50 garden for me? Discrete is best, as I have an HOA.

I don’t know anything about efences, but I have my mind made up that I want a garden. I don’t think I’ll have a ton of deer pressure, but it doesn’t take many deer to massacre the size garden I want.

Ordered 50 more asparagus crowns. 25 Jersey Knight and 25 Millennium. They're both supposed to be good for heavy soils.
We pick as much aspargus as we can eat from the road ditches around here. Also wild onions

Placed my Gurney's order last night. Looking forward to hopefully a slightly drier year.

Blastomy!!! We've had a couple of wet yrs but I've never wished for less rain. Of course most rain that misses us goes to the east...

So I got these in today, well, most of them. Hope it's a good site. Muscatune soil. Stays that color for a long way and is somewhat poorly drained, good water holding capacity. That's nice for growing corn, but things that prefer sandier and more well drained I'm kinda outta luck.

Also got in 2 rows of onions and 2 rows of potatoes so far this year.

Raspberries are in the ground. Ordered some strawberries tonight. Its getting closer.

I planted marigolds yesterday around my gardens. Woke up this morn and went out to look at them. They were all totally destroyed. Same with my dad's. What kind of mean bird does such a thing?

Bulbs or potted?

Potted.

I know around here sandhills wreak havoc in gardens with fresh young plants.

I thought everything hated marigolds. That's why I am planting them because they stink and I am hoping it keeps my chickens out of the flower gardens. Maybe they take a bit to get the stink going. I have all my tomatoes and potatoes growing in 5G buckets. So far it's working great.

I love gardening. I grew up gardening in Ohio, and after mant years of living in cities amd vagabonding around the world I am finally building up a home garden with plans for a market garden in the next few years.

The challenges in this climate difficult to overcome, but I'm doing better thna last year. I have about 40 fruit trees in the ground, of which about half are fruiting. I have about 15 berry bushes, most of which are fruiting. And I have a vegetable and herb garden spread over 4 raised beds.

So far my seedlings have not thrived due to the low temperatures and difficulties in the hardening-off process, but my potatoes are going gangbusters. I'm starting a Jerusalem artichoke bed this year, which hopefully will provide an endless supply.

I have been trying to move toward "no dig" gardening, but I can't produce the volume of compost needed. I've been incorporating hugelkultur and biochar into my beds for various reasons. I will figure it out eventually. I probably just need to build a greenhouse for my seedlings.

Build a smal cold box. I did that for all my tomatoes and other seedlings. I have never had seedlings do so well and have had no issues with hardening off.

That is actually my plan for next year. I just picked up some old windows so I can build removable glass tops for my raised beds. I think that will have to be the solution until I get a proper greenhouse.

Jersey Giant asparagus.

The "new" New Jersey varieties are outstanding, to say the least ... congratulations! Rutgers did some mighty fine work! It appears a lot of the asparagus recently appearing in stores - from MI - is the Jersey quality ... the early, little stuff typically comes from south of the border.

Telemark, I built one this year and thatis the 2nd best thing I did for starting plants. The first is using a cheap florescent light for my seedlings and putting it right on top of them when starting them in the house.

I can try that too. I have an extra light.
