    What to do with cedars

I used to hunt a property that had an area we called cedar lane. What it was was 2 rows of cedars probably 50 yds apart. The cedars were used as a wind break for crops years, or probably decades ago. Now it’s full of NWSG. The owner told me not to go in cedar lane unles it was to get a downed...

Ryegrass big mistake or little mistake and how to rectify

It depends on where you are located. In Oklahoma even perennial rye won’t make it through the summer.. It will die out in June in most case. Annual will grow on the same life cycle as wheat around here. But since it’s perennial and not annual you will need to eliminate it before it starts to...

Keeping tree tubes from rotating on seedlings

My tubes came with holes drilled through and good thick zip ties. I use irrigation pipe and put it on the down wind side of the tube. Our prevailing winds are from the S-SW so that’s where I put the stake. Then I use aluminum fence wire to wire the top of the tube to the stake. That set up has...

The Woods ... mistakes I'v made

I’ve done it before with success, but like all transplants some didn’t make it. Lately I’ve been sawing off a green hawthorn limb and placing it over the seedlings, those long thorns help to keep deer and cattle from nipping the top, it’s natures barbed wire . The tree will be over 2 ft tall by...

    Growing seedlings from bear scat

That a good idea. I think I’ll try it with cow manure next year when the beauty berry is seeding and see what happens.

Wildflower/Native Grasses: Why are seeds so expensive?

Cat scratch hit on it. Seed is a commodity. Large volume means lower price, small volume means higher price. Native seed is not chosen for planting because it has a huge seed crop like most seeds. It’s chosen because it’s a native seed and its out put of viable seed is way below what you would...

What to do with Chestnut Seedlings Over Winter?

I put up a temporary greenhouse made with the colored fiberglass corrugated 2’x8’ sheets that let a little light through. I put a tarp on a north facing fence to block the wind, take the sheets and overlap the corrugations one time and screw the corrugations into a 1x2 . Then screwed the panels...

    Chestnut trees

Yes it does . I have some that are sun scorched that always hang on through the growing season but those pictured look to be on dead branches. I’ve Noticed If you ever brush in a blind, saw off limbs from any hardwood tree before they start to go dormant and the leaves will stay on longer.

    Germinating Persimmon seeds

That’s some good info. I kind of had the persimmon on the back burner because I was busy with Chestnuts, oaks and Chinkapin and a flooded vegetable garden so far. I stratified them but they weren’t scarified. My first stab at it was not good but these take home boxes got me going. The roots...

    Germinating Persimmon seeds

I was having trouble getting persimmon seeds to germinate in RM18’s so I decided to try these little to-go trays from restaurants. Well they are working out great. I put the media in and got it a little wet, then layer the seed in and covered them with about a 1/4 of media and closed the lid. It...

UREA...How volatile, how much N loss?

If you don’t get rain within 3-4 days you will lose 20-40% the the N due to volatility. There are products that stop or slow down the volatility. The most common one is Uflexx and Umaxx. They are urea that have been treated with denitrifying agents that keep them from volitization . They also...

    What up with this oak?

Probably not south west Injury on that side of the tree. normally sw will cause a crack from bark all the way down to the heart wood. My guess is it was a root problem and that it died last fall because it already has some lichen on it.

    A new arrival

Pretty interesting if it can be grown by black walnuts as the link says. A licorice tasting roots might be alright in a Mead or cider. Jager cider anyone?

    Roundup question

I appreciate your concern for the well-being of our ecology. We differ on the best way to achieve the best outcome, but our goals are the same. America feeds the world, we teach the world about conservation, sustainability, and how to over come obstacles that have kept Nations poor for 1000’s of...

    Prayers and thoughts

Every day our local Police and Firefighters risk their lives for the community. Thank you for your service. It’s hard to understand why shots would be fired in a situation like that where they are there to help someone in need. Our thoughts and prayers will be with the family and community.

    Flooding = new seedbank?

Your right about that. The water gaps got taken out with these 3-4 inch downpours. Not only that but you can’t get in there to really fix them.

    Roundup question

I doubt they will ever see a dime of it. Bayer will appeal it, it will go to a court not in California and the overwhelming evidence that RU doesn’t cause that will overrule them. The good folks involved are a pawn in a smear game against big chemical.

The Woods ... mistakes I'v made

Another good product is Zylam. It’s basically 1/2 strength Safari. It is expensive but it’s very easy to use because you can do a bark spray with a hand can. Moves faster through the tree and kills way better than imidicloprid

The Woods ... mistakes I'v made

I lost Several seedlings to squirrels my first year. I’ve fixed that problem now though. I direct seed quite a few Oak varieties in my garden in the fall and cover them with gutter guards. The next spring when they come up the guards are zip tied together to form a little dome over the rows...
