As mentioned in my previous post...4 wheeler loaded on trailer and supplies in truck bed. I pulled into the office this morning just like this and snapped a photo as I was walking out of the parking deck. I'm headed out this afternoon to try to set my atv bridge level after the flooding we had in May.

Yes. It's my first attempt at anything like that. We got it back in position today so next steps are to cut the tree on the other end and then Bushhog a trail along the river. Its gotta dry out a lot first.

You may be a habitat guy if you stop along the road th grab a bunch of Beauty berry seeds. Cool plant. Grows 5’ tall and 5’ wide I got some good spots for it.

I’ll try some direct planting. Seeds are only 1/16 of an inch. Getting all those seeds out doesn’t sound like fun but I’ll do some to grow later.

Really like beauty berry and it grows like crazy down this way... birds do great job planting it most anywhere they perch. It's edible and some people supposedly make jam out of it. I've eaten a handful or two of berries on long runs before... weird as this may sound, tastes a bit like pine smells. Slightly pleasant taste, but bit mealy and nothing anyone would fight over unless starving. Have watched our deer browse it. Crushed leaves can work as insect repellent as well.

When your visit to the local hospital thankfully isn't for actual medical care but instead to gather acorns to lure pesky hogs rooting under your own oaks that are almost done dropping...





And then after you find the plan works well, you spend New Years Day raiding multiple area parking lots with no one to question what you're doing since businesses are closed...

I should add that while the acorns definitely drew the attention of the hogs, it only took shooting a single sow to make them avoid the area... at least for the last week or so.

The local doe and fawn population, however, didn't get the message that the supplemental acorns were meant for the hogs. Picture taken from a room in the front of our house... fence is only about 50 yards from our front door.

Hog problems MOST DEFINITELY will make you more than a bit wonky!

I've taken out 4 sows in the past few months and know neighbor has taken just as many... almost all were pregnant bringing the count of hogs we've taken out of the 2019 population to around 50 (8 or so sows PLUS the 40+ piglets that didn't get born). Still enough running around that without taking out more, I bet we're on the losing end of the population control effort.

And sure some know the trick, but for anyone not yet too wonky... did a bit of online searching and best way I found to clean initial leaves / debris out was to drop all collected in front of tilted fans so that light materials blow out and heavier /aerodynamic oval acorns fall down into separate storage bucket. I then floated out bulk of remaining debris and soaked clean acorns an additional day or two to reduce tannic acid level / make even more palatable. After a day or two soaking almost impossible to believe how many acorns were sprouting out radical roots... I wondered if the sprouting would impact the attraction, but via camera hits placed over spots I'm putting our acorns (areas that would otherwise have very few) I can say that when acorns get scare the local wildlife will happily still feed on sprouting acorns.

Beautiful scene there.
I normally collect acorns around my neighborhood and take them to my lease. 2 years ago I had a 55 gal drum full. This year , zero. I put the acorns on top of the feeders and let the blue jays plant them for me. I hope it works.
