Camp Turkey

PatinPA

5 year old buck +
Forgot to post this. Went to our family camp in Potter County, PA. Go up for comradery and exercise mainly. I haven't heard a gobble in years and put many, many miles on the boots. On this trip I was literally down to my last call. I was about 150 yards from the truck and said I'm almost back out, I'm going to call one more time then walk to the truck. I called and thought. I think that was a gobble. So I stood and listened and sure enough it was a gobble. He was down in an old clearcut. Didn't think he'd ever come up out of there. But I went and found a decent tree to sit against and looked and there was an opening that ran down about 60 yards in his direction. Thought well if he comes up it'll be right there. I called and responded immediately but wouldn't move so I called aggressively for a bit then just stopped. He gobbled about 2 more times then he went silent. I thought oh he might be coming. Sure enough right up that opening here he came! What I didn't realize was there was a big hole about 20-40 yards in front of me. He popped up over and went down in that hole and I could hear him walking but couldn't see him. Finally his head popped up at 20 yards. I shot and he disappeared. Did I miss? I didn't see him run or fly. I jumped up and he had fallen back in that hole. haha First camp turkey in probably 20 years for me.

Congrats on that gobbler! Nice long-beard, too. What did he weigh? Strange you haven't heard any gobbling for years in Potter. That's a big-woods county ..... you'd think there'd be more turkeys around.

Congrats again. Fun to get a last-minute trophy.

I got it the 2nd weekend. Started to make a post but then forgot about it. We have more turkeys around our camp but I leave them for our old camp folks. I like to cover ground in turkey season and not just sit and wait.

I don't think our scale was right. It only said 14 lbs but it had to have weighed more than that. It wasn't huge but I figured in the 18 lbs range. 9" beard , 3/4" spurs.
