What is everyone using for a base layer these days?

EuroOptic is clearing out all their Sitka stuff. Take a look at what's there. Some stuff was up to 40% off

Thanks. I get 40% off Sitka gear because I am veteran. That's the only way I can afford it. It's nice stuff for sure....but stupid expensive if you have to pay their full retail prices.

Happy Early Veteran's Day, thank you for your service!

Military thermal base layers / long John's.

Merino - FL as well

I do apologize to anyone who is a fan of cotton, but that is not an appropriate textile for cold weather. It is outstanding in the summer for wicking sweat to warm air. But that is the limit of its utility. We can admit that flannel is a fantastic fabric, so long as it does not get saturated with water, but anything cotton that gets saturated long term in cold water is a death sentence. Wool still rules.

Here’s an outstanding review of some common base layers.

I usually use a light merino layer against the skin and a heavier poly layer over that if necessary. Lots of brand names are highly overrated for this stuff even. I have lots of first lite, kuiu, Sitka but no way I’d pay full retail for them. Sitka blows out inventory annually at steep discounts and gives big discounts to tons of people in addition to service members/first responders. They must have massive mark ups.

Black Ovis has (or at least used to) solid lower priced merino. I have bought a lot of the technical garments from mountaineering type companies for discounts on cheapandsteep.com too.

I’m also a huge First Lite fan. It’s not inexpensive but over the last few years I’ve added the lightweight t-shirt and quarter zip, the fuse, the kiln, and the furnace. I mix and match depending on the temperatures. Their grid fleece is also great as a mid layer or for an outer layer in milder temps. I very often use the lightweight as a base layer and a middle weight as a mid layer covered but whatever jacket or coat I’m wearing. The furnace for cold weather over the lightweight layer, with a warm coat Is very cozy in the most cold we get here in Missouri. Don’t overlook the mid weight long john bottoms either!

Last season I changed to the Cabela’s Redhead Elite Midweight base layers. It goes on sale periodically, and I tend to get gift cards each year. The top/bottom system was under $100 and it works very well.

icebreaker and black ovis merino for me.

I live in a camo furnace henley. They've been out of stock forever, I tend to think it's been discontinued. I was wanting some non-camo flavors.

Jimi Hendrix tie dye with sleeves cut out

still 77-80 degrees in east texas

A friend of mine used to cut the sleeves off a lot of his shirts. He would say, “Sleeves are for chumps”. Heck of a guy.
