What does everyone have for rotary cutter/mowers (Bush Hog)?

Turkey Creek

5 year old buck +
What brand and model of rotary cutter/mowers do you guys have? Would you reccomend the model you have? Probably looking to purchase one in the coming months. We have a finish mower for pulling behind the tractor and it does fine on lawn type grass, but I really need something built tougher to deal with some brush and small sapling type ground cover.

I'll be watching this thread with an interest to buying.

We have a 6'brush king kutter brush hog that is on a l 35 tlb that I mow, brush, clover and field grasses.

I've been researching small sized flail mowers to use on grass and clover fields and continue beating the crap out of KK brush mower willow/mfr/ao and other brush.

I have 90 ac but maintain about 40 between mowing and burning.

Hoping to learn a lot here on this.

Ours is a really old one with the markings rubbed off. I would look on big iron or auction time and see if you can scoop an older one cheap. Lots of steel in the old ones.

I have a John Deere unit and a Frontier. Both 6' units for 40-60hp tractors. The JD unit is definitely built nicer, has a nicer cut/mulch, but it's also newer. I don't know if it's worth the extra $$, I think if you get something that's built heavy and can do some damage they're all similar.

I have a 7 ft frontier. No complaints except you cant drain the gear box. Have to pump it out. It aint the easiest thing to grease. Never seen one that is.

10 foot ancient John Deere pull behind brush hog. I traded in a woods ? Not sure but skinnier 3 point mower. I’d never recommend a 3 point over a pull behind. 3 points just bottom out to often. Pull behinds ride with the contour of the land.

I've got a Woodmax 78" Flail mower. It has the hydraulic offset and I am set up with a hydraulic top link.....so it's easy to adjust. I can operate pretty close to buildings and food plot cover at the sides.

I've cut up to 4" saplings with it....but would not make a steady diet of those. Gotta go slow when you apply that kinda load. The normal 2" + stuff cuts like butter. Leaves a clean cut in food plots. Good value as new flail mowers go. Had high ratings at TBN....which is often my source for up to date info on such things. I just replaced all the knives on mine last summer.....and need to have the old knives sharpened. I've owned mine for 7 (?) years. It's been bullet proof. I run it behind my Kubota L-3860 HSTC which has a net of 30 HP. It's a great combination for me.

The nice thing about flails and a hydrostatic tranny is that you can maintain a good load on the implement via your ground speed....and that helps to clear the machine easily and optimize your productivity.

I have a nice rotary cutter that I have not used since getting the flail. Should sell it.....it just sits there.

I also came in to recommend a flail mower. I live near farm country, and everyone here uses flail mowers instead of rotary, even for just knocking down a hay field that wasn't harvested. They all use tractors with a PTO, but I have seen some tow-behind that have a gas engine, which would really serve my needs up in Ontario. I've seen them from $750 for a cheap Chinese one before shipping, up to $10,000 for the really nice ones delivered to your driveway. I need to learn a lot more about equipment and small engine maintenance/repair before I take the plunge, but man those tow-behinds make me drool.

I have a Bush Hog BH216 rotary cutter, and a Delmorino Flipper 186 flail mower with hydraulic side shift. I pull them with my Kubota MX5400, they are both well built and I would have no reservations on buying them again.
I could have easily gone with a 7’ BH but I found a great deal on the 6’, it was used once and the owner decided to go a different route. The BH is built way better than the KK that it replaced.
