IF you buy the trees...and I have before (not these specifically)...you better be prepared to water them at least once a week every week thru the summer. They are used to nursery life and the roots will be shallow so your going to have to baby it thru at least the first year. The other thing is knowing what root stock they are on. The root stock will determine how big the tree gets, how quickly it will mature and what sort of soil it will prefer. Most of those trees you have no idea what the root stock is....other than them telling you the are semi-dwarf or the like. I have seen bare root for $10 to $15...but not at the height you are talking about.
$23.... as long as you can water them and won't be disappointed if they take a little longer to mature....I'd try a couple. But that's just me....I do dumb stuff sometimes!
It took me 5 years or so to get my first apples as well...from 3 gallon trees. Some still have not produced. Lots of things can impact when a tree will start producing. I'm not a "fruit guy" so I won't even consider talking about it. All I know is that once mine started they have gotten better and better.I think I'm on year 5 or 6 on some pears without a pear to be seen.
I transplanted them between year 2 and 3 (we moved and I wanted my trees) and they're in some pretty heavy clay, so I'll cut em some slack... But still, I'd like to see some fruit here, boys
You guys are ahead of us. I was in the woods hinging and making brush satruday and nothing is green yet. Maybe a couple greenbriars starting to show some life, but no leaves.I bought 3 Wal Mart Keifer (I think!) pear trees about 7 years ago and they are very healthy trees and would put on a bunch of pears if the frost didn't get them each spring. Checked them yesterday and they are already starting to leaf out.
I also have 2 Ayers Pear trees from Wal Mart that haven't done a thing in 4 years. They have barely grown. I got them on clearance for $9 a piece, so not a huge loss, at least they are still alive.
On the same note, I have purchased a couple apple trees from Rural King through the years and they always die.

I bought a Pear tree at Wal-mart last year called Luscious. I had never hear of the variety before so I thought I'd give it a shot. It put on a ton of growth last year. Supposed to be a late bearer. So far so good though! My Kieffer's from walmart have been awesome, tons of fruit. My Ayers from walmart finally fruited last year after 4 years.
I almost yanked my Ayers out, glad I didn't! It probably had 15 pears last year, nothing huge. Glad I waited thoughGuess there is still hope for mine then. I pruned them a couple days ago.

Yes we are most around 13 bucks and are most times from Boyer or ACN here in PA. The county conservation districts do annual tree sales and get a volume discount and they are not in business to make profit so not much mark up. Trees are amazing but varieties limited and you have to pick up.You're able to buy bare rooted 6' tall fruit trees for $10? I'd guess you're in the minority
