Update - Crab CAR

This isn't earth-shaking news, but our 1 home crab - Profusion - is pretty clean this year. No spray on it either. Since we got new neighbors, they dug out the junipers the old neighbors had planted - and the Profusion is showing no CAR this year. No junipers = no CAR anymore at our home. Crab apples on it look bigger and healthier too. Our other home crab - Sugar Tyme - is always clean, even before the neighbors' junipers were dug out. The ST is also loaded with 3/8" dia. "bird crabs". ST is a dandy DR crab, proving itself every year in hot, humid SE Pa. Both crabs have fed loads of birds fall through late winter, and early pollinators invade both trees when they bloom.

Did a single spray of bonide copper spray. Surprised how well golden delicious, pristine, and droptine did. Really filled the tank with copper to control peach leaf curl on a few saturn peaches.

No CAR on my Golden Delicious this year.

I went around in May and killed every red cedar I could find. I'll do another sweep in November or around the holidays and eliminate any new seedlings I find.

Spoke with 2 different commercial orchard owners this year, CAR is real bad with the warm n wet year we are having. One of them had to put about 1/2 of their CAR prone trees produce in the 2nd's bin. Barely had a few pristine's for me to try out. Debating cutting off the nurse branches on my pristine into trailman topwork this year. Think a branch is AWHO and another is buckman on that tree too.

For some reason you need to keep your red cedars or junipers, you can spray them for CAR as well. I spray about 15 mature ones that keep my wife's pool hidden from the road.

Golden delicious is about CAR prone as it gets. My early leaves are loaded with red freckles. No fruit on the 3 yr old tree yet. Saw a few fruits while looking for bugs on my trees today. Spot sprayed a few with wasp n hornet spray. New caterpillar, young tentworm looking, but more burgandy reddish. Thought they had some short hairs, but ould of been smooth like leafrollers. Trying to spray once a month. I'm due in a few days.
