Trailcam pics

Mister (?) Bear made an appearance again this morning. Surprising to see one twice in two months. Normally I see them once every 3-4 years.
Don't like it really. Makes me worry about damage to the cabin. Plus it might temp someone to shoot it. ("What did I do that for!?") It's not terribly large.

I used to love sleeping in the woods. Fall turkey/squirrel hunting was my favorite time of year. Walk and nap, walk and nap. A wonderful way to spend a day. Then that big bear tore the side of the house open. And my neighbor got cam pics of a big putty cat that the state says doesn't live here. And lots and lots of coyotes. And my willingness to nap was greatly reduced. 😁
Okay, I don't like this at all. What's it doing hanging around? Two days in a row? The only food around is in the cabin at the bottom of this trail. (Which for some reason after almost 70 years, certain members of my family still haven't learned is a terrible idea.)

Not a good sign, sorry to say.

Random pic here. I put an exclusion cage out last weekend in this plot, and staked it down with some short orange reflector stakes. This bucks legs lined up perfectly with the stakes to make it look like he's wearing socks.1000000876.png

The 3 youngsters that have been around all Summer are hard horned and already clicking antlers a bit. Had my 2 bigger local bucks come through one night this past week. They are still wandering. It has been hazy with moisture in the air many prime times so the pictures aren’t the best quality.IMG_3202.jpeg

Am I being oversensitive because we are dealing with ehd, or do these does look bad?

They don't look great, but they're coming out of the most nutritionally stressful portion of their lives if they have fawns. Are you seeing many fawns around?

Yeah good amount for sure…bucks on the other hand. Nonexistent

I have one or two does on camera that look similar but the vast majority have a gut on them. Next few weeks will be critical for them to pack it on for the skinny ones, if they aren't actually sick.

I bet she doesn’t have a tooth left in her head looks like to me.

With the acorn crop everyone is reporting this year, it isn't it all surprising for deer to disappear.

I am pretty sure this guy is 3.5..,,, I would let one of the kids shoot him this year. He is only a 4x4 and has short brows. Doesn’t look like he will likely ever be anything jaw dropping. With KS being a 1 buck state I wouldn’t burn a tag on him, IMG_3239.jpeg

This guy looks to be only 2.5 and he has a better rack

If you guys like those, I have 2300 more just like them. 🙄

No leaves anywhere near the camera in early July, none near it in August, but somehow from somewhere....
Glad it wasn't a cell camera. Credit to the solar panel, the cam and panel were both fully charged yesterday.

They need help.

This owl has me puzzled. There has got to be some benefit to where it is setting. MULTIPLE though not every night, it is in a picture or 2 setting in this portion of the plot. Anybody have a guess or maybe there is an owl behaviorist amongst us who can scientifically enlighten us. 😂 Setting on the ground in general does not seem like common owl behavior in my book.IMG_3258.jpeg

He’s hungry and eating crickets and grasshoppers. Steak sometimes. Hotdogs other times. Just my guess.

I never thought of grasshoppers. I always figured there were plenty of mice to keep an owl full and there does not seem to be a shortage of rabbits and voles this year. The only thing is you would think that owl would land in varying spots or be seen in more photos, the camera is on a 10 minute interval during the last 2 hours of the day. Or maybe it flies down and grabs the grasshopper and says "Yea this thing still tastes like shit." then flies off to go eat a mouse.

My guess: slight opening in the foliage, and he's hitting prey on the bare ground where he can.
