totally crushed hearing this news. such a great man, teacher, leader is gone WAY to quick. Nobody will ever leave a educational book of threads/blogs like Paul did. RIP Paul..

I never met the man, but feel he is one of my closest friends from what I learned through him sharing his knowledge. I read that he passed a few minutes ago, and was overcome with emotion. The tears are partly from being sad that the world lost a great man, partly because I know my children will know who LickCreek is. I hope I can leave a mark on this world a fraction of what Paul did. I woke up this morning and checked the weather on Saturday and was planning on hinge cutting all day, reading this makes me want to call it a day and head for the woods. God bless his family, what a guy. The best thing we can all do is educate people and share Paul's passion for improving habitat. He will be dearly missed. There won't be a hinge cut I make without thinking about him.

I never met him either, save for these threads full of great info he taught us. But you could tell he was using the time he had left here to inform as many people as possible the lessons he learned for habitat improvement / food plot growing. I think the " Lickcreek " name should be kept on the threads and plot rotations as a tribute to the man who shared them with all of us. We should all keep the " Lickcreek " name and knowledge going to other folks who can benefit from it. God rest Paul Knox, and bless his family. I hope they know how much he helped all of us and how much we appreciated his sharing that knowledge - and his faith / life. Gone too soon ( to us ) but at the right time to the Good Lord.

I put a 5'x5' piece of black plastic down over some sedge on top of the bank and stuck the Paul Tree in the middle. Hope it takes!

The Paul tree I put in this spring hasn't sprouted. Most of my hybrid poplars and dappled willows have up to 6" of growth. Are weeping willows slower to get started or did this one just not take hold for whatever reason?

Here is my Paul's tree from you last year. I planted it mothers day 2014 and kept it on my deck all summer. In the fall I planted it and caged it. It is off and growing this year!

Thanks for the offer but I won't be back up to check on it for a couple weeks and by then it will be too late for me to plant one in my sand and expect anything but poor results. I just may have to try again next year :)

I have not had good luck at all with cuttings in sand. I've got hp from 3 years ago at only 3' in plastic. I get 6' out of them after a year in my nursery and I don't have to mess with that ugly plastic.
My Paul tree from this year put on a foot already in a Rootmaker

Unless we fall into a drought I don't see how my hybrid poplars and dappled willows won't be at or near 3' by the end of their first growing season. They are 6"+ now at the end of May.

Sand is rough Dipper, makes it much tougher to succeed with cuttings.
How wide of a ground cover have you used in the past (just curious for my own education).

6' John. I just don't have sand, There is a ton of rocks in my area. Those guys in the central sands don't have near the rock I do.
I feel it really comes down to root devolpment with these cuttings. Roots are in the soil, so it really comes down to the soil. Moisture retention is a really important part of the process, that's what the plastic aids in. If the ground isn't rich in nutrients and organic matter, your just not going to get a lot of rooting. The slower the roots develop the slower the tree grows. Buellers seeing a flush of energy from the cutting, but the process needs to be supported by root growth, which is much slower.
The good news is we've just got a ton of rain. You can temporarly overcompensate soil limitations with excessive moisture. Farmers in central wi are now relying on it, with all the irrigation.
I have not watered my cuttings, id suggest Bueller do so if he wants to keep them growing strong. At least for a year or 2.
