The Sweet Clover Thread

Just wanted to show you what the drought last fall caused. I'll bet only 20 percent of they rye germinated. There was clover underneath trees and on south side of field near tree line any thoughts appreciated

What kind of soil do you have there?

SD I believe it's 57c gratan sand. The OM on my last soil sample was .9. The soil is completely dry and no rain in sight up there. I am really thinking next year to only broadcast med red balsana ysc ladino and chickory and pass on the rye or tritacle and then mow mid August and then mow agaon late September.

Oh boy. I'd hold back some rye and spread it really late (like after october 15th) when the sun isn't so powerful, and hope for some late fall moisture to get it to germinate, including first snow. I'd keep throwing low cost/high biomass crops in there and hope you hook a rain eventually. I'm talking japanese millet, rye, flax, barley (if in spring), yellow sweet clover (fall), white sweet clover (spring), chicory, plantain, and even get some rag weed and try it. I'd go harvest some thistle seed and throw it out there. Anything green will help until you can make a blanket over that sand. I'd even bless the idea of using hairy vetch to get something growing out there.

SD I did see dandelion daisy milk weed a few rye stalks and some ladino clover along with horde tail and some some species I don't know what it is. I was dreading going to look after last falls drought. Do you believe the clover mix if broadcasted and anything on the surface crimped on top of the seed can survive this fall if it does get fall moisture

Coin flip. But don’t get hung up on whether it will go or not. Seed is cheap, so failure is tolerable. Wait as long as you can so the sun isn’t as intense, and hope for some late fall moisture.

Is there another guy in your camp on here? AtJ83 looks like he’s got one of your pics in his thread.

If it’s really bad, I’d even wait until the first sure snow is coming and broadcast just ahead of it. Good chance the first snow will melt and you’ll get it germinated.

And for darn sure, cover that plot in yellow sweet clover.

SD should I broadcast the ysc Alfalfa med red chickory and balsana mid August and then crimp, there wont be much duff from the crimp. Then wait till early October and then broadcast 4 bushel of tritacle and then mow based on the soil drought?

Here’s the post roll round the plot.

The good spots laid down well.

Another big batch of red clover seed going into the bank.

Some damn critter is making tunnels out there. Ain’t more than 3-4 inches in diameter.

I might have to spot treat some grass. There are pockets where there isn’t much food in the mix.

And still most looks pretty good.

Sd can you please upload a picture of your cultipacker. How long is it and how many pounds do you think it is. I assume the bottom 4 pictures were what was standing before you rolled it? I am really impressed on how it flattens everything. Ty

Correct.

Its just wide enough to cover inside the atv tires.

Id guess it weighs 400 pounds.

Lots of up close action in this video.

SD that's a lot of duff this year. Bet your OM will be rising. Curious on your thoughts if the throw seed will have any problems with germination and reaching through to the sun?

Very nice. Here's to some good growing weather.

Very arid around me, all the isolated showers have skipped by. I seem to be running August-September dry spells in recent years.

I don’t expect the trit to have any problems. I’ll have to wait and see on the beans and zucchini. When I laid it down, that duff was 4-8” of fluffy carpet. It should settle quickly to 2-3”.

One week post roll:

The grass stayed down. I think there may finally be some volunteer sweet clover coming. The trit is germinated underneath. Tallest I saw was 3”, most was less. Maybe in another week or two that should be visible.

Chicory and clovers are standing right back up.

The bad spots that were heavy grass are throwing up some food, so I guess that corner isn’t a total loss.

SD what was your combination of seeds and pounds of seeds for this plot?

SD what was your combination of seeds and pounds of seeds for this plot?

The starter is: (per acre)

1 bushel rye
4 lbs YSC
4 lbs balansa
4 lbs chicory
4 lbs alfalfa
2 lbs plantain

I throw way more annuals in too, but that’s the core of it. The red clover came on its own.

I’ve tweaked that blend again. The biggest thing is to stay away from white clovers.

Here’s some bonus pics from this plot. I had take a second’s of pics while I was working on my firewood saturday. I did notice the old residue was pretty much gone under this crop. There was some coarse material, but it seems the rain helped jack up the decomp out there.

I like to upload these to maximum resolution and then jump on my PC and really zoom in to study them. I often see things I didn’t see when I was out there looking at them.

I didn’t plant any brassicas this year. Only thing it’s ever seen was forage collards.

SD your carpet is really going down rapidly. So your saying the duff from last year is now gone?
