The Sweet Clover Thread

Just wanted to show you what the drought last fall caused. I'll bet only 20 percent of they rye germinated. There was clover underneath trees and on south side of field near tree line any thoughts appreciated

What kind of soil do you have there?

SD I believe it's 57c gratan sand. The OM on my last soil sample was .9. The soil is completely dry and no rain in sight up there. I am really thinking next year to only broadcast med red balsana ysc ladino and chickory and pass on the rye or tritacle and then mow mid August and then mow agaon late September.

Oh boy. I'd hold back some rye and spread it really late (like after october 15th) when the sun isn't so powerful, and hope for some late fall moisture to get it to germinate, including first snow. I'd keep throwing low cost/high biomass crops in there and hope you hook a rain eventually. I'm talking japanese millet, rye, flax, barley (if in spring), yellow sweet clover (fall), white sweet clover (spring), chicory, plantain, and even get some rag weed and try it. I'd go harvest some thistle seed and throw it out there. Anything green will help until you can make a blanket over that sand. I'd even bless the idea of using hairy vetch to get something growing out there.

SD I did see dandelion daisy milk weed a few rye stalks and some ladino clover along with horde tail and some some species I don't know what it is. I was dreading going to look after last falls drought. Do you believe the clover mix if broadcasted and anything on the surface crimped on top of the seed can survive this fall if it does get fall moisture

Coin flip. But don’t get hung up on whether it will go or not. Seed is cheap, so failure is tolerable. Wait as long as you can so the sun isn’t as intense, and hope for some late fall moisture.

Is there another guy in your camp on here? AtJ83 looks like he’s got one of your pics in his thread.

If it’s really bad, I’d even wait until the first sure snow is coming and broadcast just ahead of it. Good chance the first snow will melt and you’ll get it germinated.

And for darn sure, cover that plot in yellow sweet clover.

SD should I broadcast the ysc Alfalfa med red chickory and balsana mid August and then crimp, there wont be much duff from the crimp. Then wait till early October and then broadcast 4 bushel of tritacle and then mow based on the soil drought?
