Soil sample

I know it's not rocket science but I'm sure there is a right and wrong way to take a soil sample. Could someone list the proper steps for those of who haven't done much of it before?

There is some info here: https://uwlab.soils.wisc.edu/sampling/
Only place I've ever looked for it.

When I spoke with our County Extension rep he suggested I take a sample of the top 3"-4". Remove any debris from the sample. I placed it in a zip lock bag sent it off. You'll want to either mix your samples to get an average of the area you intend to analyze or take separate samples and number them so you know where they came from. Areas in larger plots can vary so you can adjust your amendments accordingly if you so choose. Just my experience.

My soil analyzing lab likes a profile from the top 8". Which in a way makes sense to me as very few plants only have roots in the top 3-4" of soil.

Yep, top 6-8" take the trash and all! One sample per acre, fill 1/2 a ice creme pail if you are co mingling other samples, mix and take your sample from that. Good Enough.

Sounds good. Thanks!
