Seeding Rates for self mixed fall blends

DRG3

5 year old buck +
I'm looking for some help with how to set up some plot mixes I am putting together for Western KY- Zone 7a- fall food plots

Here are the mixes- if I can get some input on lbs per acre I would really appreciate the help

Mix 1
Duranna Clover
Crimson Clover annual
Oats

Mix 2
Turnips
Sugar Beats
Rape

Mix 3
Radish
Rape
sugar beat
Oats

THanks in advance

Are you planning on using all of the mixes?

I have 3 plots to put in and I am thinking 1 for each plot

The green cover smartmix calc mixes things at pretty low rates. I'm guessing the rates are more tailored to larger agricultural cover crops that are less likely to be impacted by browse pressure or mediocre planting. I feel like with typical plot sizes and moderate deer pressure the rates can be too low.

Also, I’ve never planted sugar beets but are they going to amount to anything planted this late?

Sugar beets should be planted about the same time as corn

I thought sugar beets were more of a monoculture crop? I've never tried to grow them but for some reason I'm thinking sugar beets are more fussy to grow. Maybe not.

I was looking at two mixes on their site. When I look at this, the thing that jumps out at me is the difference in seeding rate. Makes me wonder about 1) Number of seeds per acre; and 2) If seeding Fall Release a little heavier might be a good move.

Fall Release.
Plant 70 pounds per acre when seeding with a no-till drill or other planting implement and 100 pounds per acre when broadcasting.
Crimson Clover, Fixation Balansa Clover, Balady Berseem Clover, Spring Forage Pea, Winter Peas, Spring Oats, Black Oats, Cereal Rye, Radish, Turnip, Buckwheat, and GreenBoost Biology Package

Super Fall Release
Drill at 110 lbs per acre.
Broadcast at 130 lbs per acre
Fixation Balansa Clover, Alfalfa, Spring Oats, Black Oats, Spring Peas, Cereal Rye, Radish, Turnip, Sunflower

When it comes to a monoculture of brassica, I shoot for 1 plant per square foot at most.

In a mix I go much lighter.

I will add a recommendation to the greencover seed smartmix calculator. Even if they don’t have the specific varieties you are planting, you can find equivalents and get poundage per acre from there.

My fall mix is about 10#/acre of various clovers, 5# of chicory, 5# radish, and no more that 2#/acre of a brassica mix (turnip & rape & kale). I get great fall plots and in the early spring I frost seed more clover / chicory and let it roll until about mid August…..when I do it all again.

Resurrecting this old thread in hopes of crossing this bridge. I put together a mix using the Green Cover site and the planting rate is set at 50#/acre (by them) and that seems awfully low. I'm thinking of doubling it but I wonder if that's even enough? Will be drilling in using my 3p600 into standing soybeans (not canopied).
Here is my desired mix, again thinking of going to 100#/ac rate. Any feedback appreciated. This mix will be planted directly adjacent to a straight brassica planting, two strip method.

I'd go double at least double on Peas and radish, especially if there's decent browse pressure.

Double or more on fixation balansa. And I'd cut down on the cereals, especially trit and rye, unless you want the plot to be dominated by cereals and the trit and rye will probably be pretty stemmy come Oct.

In my similar blends i've found that 12-15# of oats as the only cereals ends up being pretty well represented in what's actually growing in my plots. I broadcast rye over the tops of everything in Sept and that reduces the competition for space/nutrients with brassicas/legumes grow but fills in thin spots and keeps cereals desirable come oct/nov.

I should've mentioned, this would be a ~Sept 1 planting and I almost always come over the top around Oct 1 with broadcast rye 50-100#/acre. This year will be 50# or less though, I've been dealing with too much thatch by June.
I appreciate the recommendations on the tweaks to the blend!

SmartMix is not smart at times. It adds an even percentage of each crop. If you create their Fall Release mix in SmartMix, it doesn't mix in the same ratios as they do. The image is big, but putting the two side by side, you can see Fall Release is dominated by Black Oats, Cereal Rye and peas. The rest has a smaller percentage. SmartMix made them all an even percentage.

That might not be too bad with the cereals then. I was thinking of it as late july/early august planting.
