Seed options for failed plot

Bonez

Yearling... With promise
I have about 2.5 acres of a failed plot due to the lack of rain in my area(S IL). I don’t have a drill but do have access to a disc and spreader for this area. The extended forecast shows 50-60% chance of rain 4/10 days coming up. What should I be looking at to try and get in the ground during this time to hopefully salvage some food? I should mention, I will only have a single day to do this work due to prior commitments and a 4hr drive to the farm. I appreciate the help!

Did the seed you planted germinate and die, or is it still in the ground waiting for rain? If it's still there waiting for rain, I wouldn't do anything. If it germinated and died, I would just sling a winter wheat and rye grain plus maybe some small seeds like mentioned above.

Being that you are in southern Illinois you have plenty of options. I’d go with radish, turnips, berseem clover, followed by rye in about 3 weeks.

I haven’t seen the plot in person but just based off the photos, I’m guessing little germination and the kill. The seed was broadcasted and then dragged with a thick layer of thatch over top.

I’m on the southern border of Shelby county, hopefully we get some rain so I can get something growing. Other than weeds! Lol

Spread seed, then disc, then cultipack. No cultipacker, no problem. Get some eye hook and drag a log or two behind the discs. Doing a comparison of disc before disc after and just no-till right now since labor day weekend. spread then disc is looking best so far. NY has been dry.

Rye has a better chance than oats. But oats with tillage will do good too. Thats if you can't find rye.

Make sure your discs don't till too deep. Adjust angle, no extra weight.

Grain rye and red clover, with a little chicory thrown in. It's what I'd do at our hunting camp, FWIW.
I'd also add white sweet clover to this as well. The tonnage comes quickly with WSC, and the deer love it like alfalfa.

I talked with the agronomist today from a reputable seed company. He feels that with where I’m located I still have plenty of time to get fall plots in the ground. I appreciate everyone’s help and I’ll be down at the farm Mon/tues next week. It’s showing rain all week now. Praying for rain once I get seed on the ground!

Scooped up an extra bag of rye today. Leaving for vacation friday for the week. No rain in sight. Average 1st frost is october 13-21. At camp its dry too, average frost s anywhere in september. One plot looked pretty dead, so I reseeded it over the weekend. The other plots got about 3-4 inches on the rye, doesn't look stressed. But it was planted 1st week in august, probably should be a good bit higher.
