You would think that the deer in the South would be bigger than the deer up North due to the fact that Northern deer are trying to survive on damn near nothing for half of the year. You've still got beautiful greens and where I'm at it's a baron wasteland already. I get the bigger deer to withstand the colder temps part but it's kinda hard to believe the deer with year round food aren't the bigger bodied deer. HUH
The lawnmower plot planted last fall is providing good early spring browse. The browse coming up is primarily cereal rye, along with some brassicas that did not germinate last fall, and some red clover.
The 2025 Lawnmower Plot is providing lots of browse for deer and turkey this spring. I mowed the cereal rye (rye grain, not rye grass) to keep it more palatable for the deer. There is also some clover in the plot.

The John Deere D100 (cheapest riding lawnmower they offered back in 2012) is up to the task!
It looks rough, but deer and turkey are still using the plot, and the rye and clover will soon be back and looking great. After this picture, an 1/6th of an inch of rain fell, so I expect things to green up soon.
