Seed options for failed plot

Bonez

Yearling... With promise
I have about 2.5 acres of a failed plot due to the lack of rain in my area(S IL). I don’t have a drill but do have access to a disc and spreader for this area. The extended forecast shows 50-60% chance of rain 4/10 days coming up. What should I be looking at to try and get in the ground during this time to hopefully salvage some food? I should mention, I will only have a single day to do this work due to prior commitments and a 4hr drive to the farm. I appreciate the help!

Grain rye and red clover, with a little chicory thrown in. It's what I'd do at our hunting camp, FWIW.

Did the seed you planted germinate and die, or is it still in the ground waiting for rain? If it's still there waiting for rain, I wouldn't do anything. If it germinated and died, I would just sling a winter wheat and rye grain plus maybe some small seeds like mentioned above.

Being that you are in southern Illinois you have plenty of options. I’d go with radish, turnips, berseem clover, followed by rye in about 3 weeks.

I haven’t seen the plot in person but just based off the photos, I’m guessing little germination and the kill. The seed was broadcasted and then dragged with a thick layer of thatch over top.

I’m on the southern border of Shelby county, hopefully we get some rain so I can get something growing. Other than weeds! Lol
